Please help; I don't like cheese and DH doesn't like fish. What's left to make?! There are only so many times per week we can eat pasta or omelettes without getting tired of it, and can't afford fleishigs more often either.
And I can't just make fish for me and let DH eat something else, or the reverse with cheese. We each can't handle the smell/sight of our dislike at all. Once he made macaroni and cheese and I felt ill all day

I made a parve dinner tonight, which consisted of split pea soup and corn bread. (I make one parve dinner per week.) I find that soups are usually a hit in my house in the winter, as is anything with eggs (esp. French toast). Last week I made an absolutely delicious red lentil dal recipe that I got from this site, with some coconut basmati rice on the side.
I got the soup recipe from an imamother:
Vegetarian Split Pea Soup
Adapted from The Moosewood Cookbook, by Molly Katzen
Serves 6
3 c dry split peas
7 c water, or more as needed (richer w/ veggie stock)
1 bay leaf
2 t salt
1 tsp dry mustard
2 c onions minced
4-5 cloves garlic
3 stalks celery, chopped
2 med carrots, chopped
1 sm potato, thinly sliced
lots of fresh black pepper to taste
3-4 T red wine or balsamic vinegar
fresh parsley
1. Place split peas, water, bay leaf, and dry mustard in pot. Bring to boil, lower heat and simmer partially covered about 20 min.
2. Add onion, garlic, celery and potato. Simmer partially covered 40 more minutes. Stir occasionally, adding more water if necessary.
3. Add black pepper and vinegar to taste. Serve topped with fresh parsley. Also good with a few croutons on top and extra vinegar. _________________ “For 30 years she served nothing but leftovers. The original meal was never found.”

| Does you family go for tofu or soy substitutes? I love them in stir frys--easy, flexible. My family only likes it if I put cheese on top so usually I make a side dish of brown rice for me and regular pasta for them. So I stir fry the onion first, add firm tofu and/or soy meat, next I put in any frozen veggies. For the liquid I have used tomato sauce, Imagine soup or soy sauce. Cook on low flame until veggies are the softness you like. With those side dishes this goes a long way.

These are really good - I make 3x the amount and freeze them for easy dinner. Sometimes I serve them in wraps with salad or coleslaw inside and sometimes in rolls.
(my kids dont like the cumin so sometimes I just leave it out)
Homemade Black Bean Veggie Burgers
Ingredients
* 1 (16 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
* 1/2 green bell pepper, cut into 2 inch pieces
* 1/2 onion, cut into wedges
* 3 cloves garlic, peeled
* 1 egg
* 1 tablespoon chili powder
* 1 tablespoon cumin
* 1 teaspoon Thai chili sauce or hot sauce
* 1/2 cup bread crumbs
Directions
1. If grilling, preheat an outdoor grill for high heat, and lightly oil a sheet of aluminum foil. If baking, preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), and lightly oil a baking sheet.
2. In a medium bowl, mash black beans with a fork until thick and pasty.
3. In a food processor, finely chop bell pepper, onion, and garlic. Then stir into mashed beans.
4. In a small bowl, stir together egg, chili powder, cumin, and chili sauce.
5. Stir the egg mixture into the mashed beans. Mix in bread crumbs until the mixture is sticky and holds together. Divide mixture into four patties.
6. If grilling, place patties on foil, and grill about 8 minutes on each side. If baking, place patties on baking sheet, and bake about 10 minutes on each side.

| We made a spegetti squash last night that was really good. I put cheese in the marinara sauce but its optional. You can use tomato sauce or butter and garlic or pesto. Its a great alternative to noodles.
