For those of you who had your wisdom teeth pulled, do you suggest being put to sleep or not?

I did not have general anesthesia when I had all of my wisdom teeth pulled but it wasn't a very complicated job--they were all in fully (non were compacted) and were basically straight pulls--
But I think it's more of a personal preference and it depends on the extent of the surgery.

Do you have an oral surgeon you're going to use?
If you're in Brooklyn, I highly recommend Dr. Zeitlin in Sheepshead Bay.

for a routine extraction you don't need anything more than novacaine.

I was also up and I'm very skiddish. But I have an excellent dentist who was able to do it with just novacane.

I would never have general anasthesia unless there was absolutely no choice - there are risks involved. (I had all my wisdom teeth out without several years ago, including one or two impacted.)

GO TO SLEEP

For those who've said general anasthaesia has risks, well GA has changed, nowadays it is FINE to have.I had it, my 16 y.o dd had it, my two sons, dh and my FIL...it is safe. Few side effects. Only for the realy elderly would I not advise it. Wisdom teeth removal while still awake...horribly unpleasant. I was told by several specialists to have it done while under. I did, and I am glad I did it.

No one said there are big risks. But of course they exist. The fact that you or me know thousands of people who had a general anaesthetic and are fine, doesn't make it 100% safe. No medical procedure is 100% safe, but we weigh up risks and benefits. So, of course, if someone who is generally healthy needs necessary surgery with general anaesthesia, no one is going to say don't do it because there is a tiny risk. But here we are talking about general anaesthesia as an option, so why take even a tiny chance? Quite honestly, I had never heard of anyone having general anaesthesia for dental work, except for little children who won't cooperate. Everyone I know who has had wisdom teeth removed has had local anasthesia, and no one was scarred for life...

I had novacaine. But I had to have them done in 2 different visits. The bottom ones were totally under the gums. I think it would have been easier to have had general and had them all out in one go.

Getting put to sleep for wisdom teeth removal is an unecessary risk. Although it's proven safe, there is always a risk. That's any med's in general. I went to one surgeon to remove mine - all 4 impacted - he refused to do it when I was awake - he told my mom I'm a girl and have a small jaw and cannot do it awake - so I went to someone else willing to do it. If you put your mind to it - it's doable - especially if they're not impacted - it's just like pulling regular teeth pretty much. I took with me music and headphones and turned it up blasting so it drowned out whatever they were doing. Hatzlacha.

are they simple extractions? impacted?
if yes then just get numbed and do one at a time. it was pretty simple and quick.
if answer is no, then consult with dentist

there is more to consider than where the teeth are and if they are impacted ... some people have enough anxiety and need to be under to tolerate it ... my dd had to take that route ...

my son with a simple novocain shot turned pale & cold - the dental surgeon refused to take them out ...

I had all 4 done at once and they were all impacted. I did not have GA and if I had to do it again I wouldn't do it with GA. With a good dentist (you should be using an oral surgeon) it should be quick and easy with no pain and little swelling afterwards. By the last one the novacaine wore off a little so I raised my hand (as my dentist told me to do if I felt pain) and he stopped, gave me more, waited a few min for it to take effect and continued.
You really should ask about your specific dentist to see other patients opinions on how it was.
