I have heard Pearl, Perel and Perla. Are there any others to consider? I know my DH is going to hate all three and prefers Penina!

Thanks

Perele (sounds like he won't like that one, either), or Perri (maybe he'll like that one--without the "L" I think it sounds more up-to-date--if that's what he is looking for). Oh, and I mean I'd probably still give the real name, just call the kid "Perri".

As someone with the name Perel (thankfully my 3rd name) I can tell you that the name is IMHO hideous and dh couldn't stop laughing when I told him my full name. So I can fully understand your dh if he doesn't like it - I would have given myself Penina instead if it was up to me, but my great, great grandmother was Perel, so that's what I got stuck with.

I love Perel. I find it very classic but not so common, and very classy.

I also think it's a beautiful name. I know a wonderful person with that name. Maybe someone not used to it would find it funny because it sounds like "Peril"... Kind of like your middle name is "danger"... Wink

Dh is Israeli - I doubt he even knows the word peril! But then again he's Moroccan so all yiddish names sound funny to him!!!!

I went to college with a "cool" frum girl named Pearl and the non-Jews thought it was so funny that such a modern, normal girl had an old-lady's name. I like Perel and Perla.

I'm going to side with your dh and say Penina!

my grandmother's first name was Perel. My cousins in Israel decided to use the Hebrew version "Penina" after she passed away.
