Thanks AMMom. So I edited my posts and now the only references to the L"H are those of you who quoted and chastised me... That I would call ironic. I'm pretty makpid about L"H, but sometimes I slip up. Next time PM me. Thanks.

I had just had a spate of people from Chicago in town informing everyone of the same thing you had suggested. Honestly, my expression of disgust was at the whole crowd and sorry you were the "makah b'patish"

[quote="Tzippora"]From another forum:

See, I told you Obama was going to be roasting Jews!

Rolling Laughter oy, if you only knew what some kids in the community are saying .... that Obama is going to make a law that the Jews are to be burned. I wonder are there people on Pennsylvania Ave, who are now saying , "there goes the neighborhood"?

BTW the video was very funny Smile

I might lose my head for this ? but I'm asking op sincerely here... funny as it is, does this speech violate laws of lashon harah by listening to it? I'm working on L.H. but am not yet proficient.

well, if it is strictly in jest I would have thought it was in a completely different category (I once went to a MO shul fundraising dinner in which the emcee was roasting the Rabbi and the Rabbi didnt' seem to have any problem with it) Ask your LOR...don't forget Obama isn't Jewish. If you get a psak that we should delete the thread, then pm me and I'll notify Crayon.

I was thinking about this again. IIRC, the shaila is about beis din accepting someone who wants to convert knowing they want to marry a Jew, not that their conversion is "pasul" once it is done. I'll have to ask dh when he gets home, but I'm quite confident I remember learning that once they are converted, if they are sincere in keeping shabbos, kashrus and taharas hamishpach (the "big three") there is no shaila about the conversion. .

right...this is what I learned...although there may be more stringent opinions. And I assume if he is observing the big three, so is she..

I got this in an email today and can't vouch for it's validity. I don't care about politics one way another except in my village.
Subject: Fw: Who is Rahm Emanuel?

Now that we have a president with a brain but still a major
concern for many Jews about his stance on Israel, etc., I think we're seeing
the truth come out. Actions speak louder than words. So far, his first two
appointments are Jews (including David Axelrod).

Interesting to note that the first official thing Obama decided to
do as President Elect was to offer the White House Chief of Staff position
to Rep. Rahm Emanuel. Rep. Emanuel isn't just a Jew by name - here are some
interesting facts:

Emanuel's father, the Jerusalem-born Benjamin M. Emanuel, is a
pediatrician and was a member of the Irgun, a Zionist military organization
that later became part of the Israeli Defense Forces, in the 1940s. His
mother, Martha Smulevitz, worked as an X-ray technician; she was the
daughter of a local union organizer, and would herself become a civil rights
activist; Emanuel's older brother, Ezekiel, is a noted oncologist and
bioethicist, and his brother, Ari, is a high-powered talent agent in Los
Angeles and inspired Jeremy Piven's character Ari Gold on the HBO series
Entourage.

Rahm himself is also the inspiration for the character Josh Lyman on
The West Wing. He also has a younger sister named Shoshanna, fourteen years
his junior.

During the 1991 Gulf War, Emanuel was a civilian volunteer in
Israel: rust-proofing brakes on an army base in northern Israel.

Emanuel's wife Amy Rule, a graduate of the Wharton School of the
University of Pennsylvania, was non-practicing before converting to Orthodox
Judaism around the same time as her wedding. They are "active members of a
modern Orthodox congregation, Anshe Shalom, in Chicago". Amy is "heavily
involved with the Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School in the Lakeview
neighborhood of Chicago." They have three children, son Zacharias and
daughters Ilana and Leah. The children attend "the Conservative Jewish day
school, which Emanuel himself attended as a child". Rabbi Asher Lopatin of
Anshe Sholom B'nai Israel Congregation, is quoted as saying: "It's a very
involved Jewish family"; "Amy was one of the teachers for a class for
children during the High Holidays two years ago." Emanuel has said of his
Judaism: "I am proud of my heritage and treasure the values it has taught
me."

Please feel free to pass along to Jewish voters who may have still
have fears about whether they can trust a President Obama. It's time to
put an end to the smears.

but didn't Rahm give up his Israeli citizenship at 18 in order to avoid military service? I am for skipping military service under current Israeli govt but imho if one is learning instead that is one thing but to GIVE UP CITIZENSHIP is well...

Don't give me a Black Eye just sharing an honest, barb free thought here.

I bet if he were still an Israeli citizen he wouldn't be able to be chief of staff. Just a guess. So, he's not an Israeli citizen. Doesn't take away from what his father did for the country, right?

Okay, but please don't come. My sons don't have to protect you, okay? We also have that government but realize our social obligation. A few less people to protect will do us just fine. Thanks. Just sharing and honest, barb-free thought here!

I do not think there is a problem with dual citizenship and holding governmental office. I've tried to google and find such a law but others, who have held governmental office, have had dual citizenship.

The government was quite compassionate and in many cases allowed soldiers not to throw their own families out of their homes. Don't you think that was nice?
Whatever, just don't come here with preconceptions about what you will or won't do or what your sons will or won't do. You really have to be here. The only legal reason to get out of the army is religious. If you oppose the government and therefore don't want to serve, you can sit in jail.

I don't know why you're telling me this. Personally, my husband wears a kippah everywhere but the shower. If you weren't there back then (around 1970 I think IIRC) I don't think you're in a position to judge.

A roast is kind of a dinner given in someone's honor. At the dinner various people get up and tell jokes about the honoree. Kind of like being the sole object of Jay Leno's monologue.
