For you Brits out there. I just came across this and I thought I'd share. Razz

I Have the kettle on for a brew! because ...

" Every nation in creation has its favourite drink
France is famous for its wine, it's beer in Germany
Turkey has its coffee and they serve it blacker than ink
Russians go for vodka and England loves its tea

Oh, the factories may be roaring
With a boom-a-lacka, zoom-a-lacka, wee
But there isn't any roar when the clock strikes four
Everything stops for tea

Oh, a lawyer in the courtroom
In the middle of an alimony plea
Has to stop and help 'em pour when the clock strikes four
Everything stops for tea

It's a very good English custom
Though the weather be cold or hot
When you need a little pick-up, you'll find a little tea cup
Will always hit the spot

You remember Cleopatra
Had a date to meet Mark Anthony at three
When he came an hour late she said "You'll have to wait"
For everything stops for tea

Oh, they may be playing football
And the crowd is yelling "Kill the referee!"
But no matter what the score, when the clock strikes four
Everything stops for tea

Oh, the golfer may be golfing
And is just about to make a hole-in-three
But it always gets them sore when the clock yells "four!"
Everything stops for tea

It's a very good English custom
And a stimulant for the brain
When you feel a little weary, a cup'll make you cheery
And it's cheaper than champagne

Now I know just why Franz Schubert
Didn't finish his unfinished symphony
He might have written more but the clock struck four
And everything stops for tea"

Biscuit anyone?

As a former coffee-drinker turned tea-drinker...I love this little song...
I even drink tea with milk now...(how British can you get?)

we have a shelf full of quite a variety of teas ... wonderful to keep you warm & cozy on a cold evening ... when I was sick I had regular tea with a spot of milk as the closest thing to my cafe con leche ... my sister went home saying she never realized how soothing tea was and she is going to buy some mint tea ... my mother drinks coffee at 3:00 pm - that's her tea time ...

Well, I'm as British as they come (even though I've not been there for about four years and have been living in Israel for 17 years), and my London accent is so strong that people sometimes think I'm straight off the boat!

Nonetheless, if there is one thing that I can't abide, it's a cup of tea!!!! Give me coffee any day!

Oh, and sorry to burst the American dream, but I never knew anyone in England who had an official "tea time" apart from a few middle-class non jews, and not so many of them did that either!

I have one of these next to my bed. On weekdays, the alarm clock rings and I hit the snooze button and the button for my water heater at the same time. By the time the alarm rings again, I have a cup of tea waiting for me. I don't get out of bed on weekdays without tea. (On Shabbat, I shuffle all. the. way. to. the. kitchen. to get to the urn and have tea.)

As for tea-time? All the time is tea time!

I'm English and can safely say that I have never drunk tea with milk. My grandparents all drank tea with milk and over Sukkot I taught my Israeli DH how to make tea for my Savta. My parents don't drink tea with milk either. Coffee, however, I can only drink with milk.
I drink herbal teas and also lemon tea especially green cap Lift (the Brits will know what I mean) - when my parents or friends come to visit, they bring me supplies.

DH is English. When we first got married and he asked for tea with milk I thought of leaving him Rolling Eyes

How more crazy can this man get? Tea with milk? I am married for a number of years and drink tea here and there but never with milk. In mils house when someone makes a tea I run out. I cant imagine how it tastes.........

Oh ESB (BTW I pictue you as being tall and elegan because of your screen name)
tea without milk is for the sick !
but tea should be drunk strong and with milk.

After 28 years in Israel I still like a strong cuppa (English teabags of course)

Shabbat Shalom

That's interesting...when I was living in England, people would be surprised or would make comments about my not drinking tea with milk...(I.e.."typical American")...then I couldn't abide milk in tea...but now I realize the secret...as Hila said...the tea has to be really strong....

I just keep my earl grey tea bag in my cup and pour in a bit of milk and sugar. It would be too strong to be drunk on its own. My dh nearly flipped when he saw me drinking tea in milk. I used to hate milk in my tea...I used to think it tasted like my milchig dishwater...but if strong...it is yummy..

But now my nerves are acting up again and I think I'll have to switch to green tea...definitely without milk, though!

My mother is one of the few people I know who actually does the tea-time thing. She will stop at around 3.30 - 4 o'clock and have a cup of tea with a digestive or other 'dunking' biscuit or a scone.

Me, I love tea, I definitely drink far too much. I'm on my first cuppa of the day as I type this. Hila is right, English tea is much stronger and flavoursome than Israeli tea, when I was in Sem I would use 2 Israeli teabags and still I found it wasn't strong enough.

mummy hila Shosh or other British ladies:

Why do the English call those biscuits "digestive" biscuits? I was so fascinated when I came to England and saw "digestive" written on all these "big cookies" Are they supposed to aid the digestion?

Yes, they are supposed to be good for digestion because of wholemeal flour (more fiber)
and baking soda (kinda antacid).

IMHO, afternoon tea (the one with cucumber sandwiches, cream pastry et al) is quite non jewish, though Grodzinski (kosher bakery) in London makes quite decent cream pastries and scones. When someone asks you if you want to come for a tea, that's usually The best teabag
to make strong tea (for milky tea) is PG Tips. Lipton is way too weak.

Hey Mrs Bissli - I agree. PG Tips is the way to go!

Tetley is bearable.

And please - when I come for tea - offer me some chocolate digestives Smile
