last I checked - the parent shouldn't be doing the son's homework ... and most certainly shouldn't be going crazy over it ... so how can you teach him how to do it ...

If your son doesn't understand the homework, the best thing to do is call or write a note to the teacher that he needs help understanding that area of math. You don't want him to fall behind.

Twisted Evil Please write a note to the teacher-

1 page of Math homework for dc1 + 1 page of Math homework for dc2 + 1 page of Math homework for dc3 + 1 page of Math homework for dc4 + 1 page of Math homework for dc5 = 5 PAGES OF MATH HOMEWORK FOR DM.

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO TEACH THE MATERIAL TO MY CHILD SO THAT HE KNOWS IT AND CAN COMPLETE IT AT HOME WITH MINIMAL HELP. IT'S NOT FAIR FOR ME TO END UP WITH 5 PAGES OF HOMEWORK EVERY NIGHT! I HAVE DINNER TO MAKE, DISHES TO WASH AND CHILDREN TO PUT TO SLEEP. Twisted Evil

Is your son in fifth grade?
this looks like a fifth grade curriculum (I should know, since I worked with fifth graders for 3 years).

Let me give you some helpful pointers. If you are seeing numbers that end in "ths" (like hundredths, thousandths, etc.) then you know that when it is written in word form that the "and" is a decimal point.

Take the first example.

The five is before the "and" so the five is before the decimal.
If you need help with the remainder of the problem, it would be helpful for you to know that there are tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten thousandth, and hundred thousandths.

Example:
6.12345
Which number is in the hundred thousandth's place?
the 5.

pm me if you need more help or post on this thread.

Many children will need manipulatives and graphic organizers, even in fifth grade. I don't know your son, but many schools skip important concepts and kids just do not seem to grasp the abstract concepts. Here's a great site you might try:

http://www.teachers.ash.org.au/jeather/maths/dictionary.html I love this site.

Also, http://answers.yahoo.com/dir/;.....=396545161 (Yahoo answers to math questions)

Nelson Grade 5 math site.

Hope this helps. Good luck
