We are going away for Shabbos and staying in a family's home we don't know. Any ideas on a good gift for them? Anything other than the usual nicely wrapped chocolates in a nice dish.

hand towels, soaps for a bathroom, you can have a flower arrangement sent to their home, if they have young children maybe a new board game, a pretty havdala candle.....

I love when guests send flowers. Arranged flowers from the florist are pricey and not something I would splurge for myself, but they do make the whole shabbos atmosphere feel so special.

Any type of nice serving piece makes a good hostess gift too (I.e. a platter, cake plate, salad servers or cake knife with fancy handles, etc.) though it's harder when you don't know the person's taste.

I hate when people bring me chocolates(of course they dont know this)or any type of nosh.

I think a nice gift is probably a good bottle of wine,or a tea set as someone already described, negger vassar w/hand towel is nice. flowers are iffy, what if they look better than what her dh usually gets her?we once brought someone a full vase of flowers and she said,"I have never received such beautiful flowers before....her dh just had brought her home some flowers. ours got center stage.we felt uncomfortable the whole shabbos.the look on her dh's face when he saw the arrangement we brought Embarassed

it should be something for the whole household to partake of.
a game for the children means they will bug the parents how to play it...erev shabbos, and probably extra work for eemaa to clean up later

great ideas guys, thanks. I also dislike the chocolate/dried fruit stuff. I ended up getting a very nice, simple hand towel and soaps in an elegant glass vase. Something I would enjoy, yet very neutral in color and style.

I recently gave a recipe book about cupcakes, soem cupcake paper cups with patterns on them and 4 different types of sprinkles to decorate. I wrappedit all with cellophane and a nice bow. The family has 4 girls who love to bake and they really liked it.
