my 22 month old ds is having this surgery iyh tomorrow. although I've been told its a very simple procedure, needless to say I am a nervous wreck.
did anyone here's kid have this surgery at this or similar age?
can u give me some details about the whole thing? I dont think anything will calm me down right now, but I'd like to know as much as possible about what will go on.

will he have an IV put in?
how will they put him under anasthesia?
will they give me a problem to stay with him until he's under?
how fast does it take them to wake up and be ready to leave the hospital?
anything at all I can do to make it easier and not so scary for him?

I did call the hospital and left a message for the anesthisiologist who will be on call tomorrow morning for her to call me back and give me some details and answer some questions...but till then...anyone?

I had a 5 year old and I can say I feel for you but it was relly not as tough as I thought. They let me stay with her until she was put out-that was scary to watch- and as soon as she was in the recovery room I sat near her bed and me and the nurse tried to wake her. She was disoriented and groogy for the first few minutes but slowly sat up and was given ice chips and a dvd player-that was the best thing bec. it's was real treat for her! About a half hour later they gave her some apple juice and 2-3 hours after she woke up we were on our way home. Good Luck and Refuah Shelaima.

And yes of course he'll have an IV but they will most likely put it in once he's asleep.

Hydrocele repair is surgery to correct a birth defect in which there is a passageway between the abdomen and the scrotum. This defect causes fluid to collect around the testicle (a hydrocele).

Isn't it only for boys?

Amother 2 here.

My son also had this surgery done, not too long ago.
But he's older than your son, almost 10.

It was quite quick. My DH went in to the Operating Room with him, and they let him stay until my son was asleep.
They called us in from the waiting room about 1/2 an hour later.

He had to stay overnight at the Hospital, because he was throwing up, and couldn't keep anything down.
By the next morning he was fine, and they let him go home.

If you have any other questions, please ask and I'll try to help as much as I can.

P.S. btw, are you in Israel? or the US?

thanks for your quick responses.

I am in the US. he will be having it done in NY Presbytarian Hospital.

difr do they always put the IV in after he's asleep? cuz I was gonna put the numbing cream on both his arms so it wouldnt be painful for him, but if he's sleeping thats even better.

my son wont be able to handle ice chips. he's too little. should I bring along a bottle of milk for when he wakes up? or will they not let him drink it?

and did they give you the dvd player? or you brought your own? if he has to lie still for 2-3 hours, I dont know how I'd keep him busy!

Is Dr. Schlussel, Tennenbaum and Glassberg doing the surgery? If yes they are great.

You can't exactly numb up his arms entirely! And how do you where they'll do the IV! My daughter had another procedure done but needed to be put out, not a hydrocele!!

My son was born with undescended testicle. Dr. Schlussel did the repairs. He was great.

what made you decide to do surgery

I have 2 ds with this - one is 2 years and one is newborn.

the 2 year old got an ultrasound that showed it ok -- I have to speak to the pediatrician still but I'd like to avoid surgery if it's not necessary.

from my experience, if it is a communicating hydrocele that did not resolve itself by 18 months then it will usually not go away on its own. I have done surgery on 2 of my boys.

Our ds also had it done. It was already over 2 years ago so I don't remember all the details. BH it all went well and smoothly. I am by no means a medical expert, however for the mother who was on the fence about it, please speak to your pediatrician regarding this situation since an undescended testicle can be directly involved with reproduction and the earlier you do it ( if necessary) the better chance the child has of no problems later on.
