Gilad has decided he's not a baby Wink so he shouldn't eat baby food served by Mommy anymore--he wants to feed himself. I really really can't deal with food all mushed in his hair 4 times a day, so what can I feed him? So far he has those little Gerber stars, cut raisins, broken up bits of dried bananas, dried apples in little bites, but what else can I do?

He can't have dairy (at all--truly allergic), soy, or egg, nut, peanut, and honey of course at this age.

We eat vegan during the week, but I think I'm going to have to cut up little bits of chicken for him. He won't take formula (his formula is REALLY nasty Sad ) unless it's mixed at least 50/50 with juice, so his only other protein is nursing (which he still does about 8 times every 24 hours).
Help!

cut-up soft fruits, such as pears or peaches, broken-up rice cakes? You can also try cooked vegs such as zucchini, carrots, etc. How about bread, from whatever grain Gilad can have?

Thanks. I made some little homemade teething biscuits today; he likes them but they're still pretty sticky once he sucks on them and rubs them all over his face. Blech.

My sons get teeth pretty early by 4 months so they never really let me feed them baby food.

My son is also very allergic to dairy too. I bought a book called Into the Mouth of Babes by Susan Firkaly. It has some great ideas about feeding babies and toddlers and specifically adresses allergies and alternatives in recipes. Some finger foods that I gavemy sons were:

Steamed carrots, zuchini, parsnip or just from a soup
Meat balls
Avocado
french fries
Cut up chicken
Pancakes (homamade)
Latkes (potato and other veggies)

Maybe try giving him a pretzel to lick, at the same time try to push some food into him.

a piece of challah/bread, the crust part.

Elise,

Try making vegtable soup and skimming off those vegtables for him. My son really liked those at that age.
We also gave him all sorts of fresh, mushy fruit like kiwis, cut blueberries, things like that. He also really liked chopped liver! I have no clue why, I cannot stand the stuff! But he liked it.

There are many people who say that if you have a good milk supply your baby doesnt need solids until a year... so it makes sense that your baby is still nursing very often... my baby is also 8 months and if she doesnt want to eat I jsut dont give her real food that day and shes fine...
