I bought nuby cups first, b/c I heard they were good. they leaked everywhere. I also had that issue with avent- bottles & cups.

Not the straw ones if put in properly. My son even takes them to bed!

(I only use straw cups b'shitta -- until my older son was older and started using a tumbler for bed. Never a sippy cup.)

why do you let your kid take cups to bed? that defeats the whole purpose of not using sippy cups.

Why? Because I also keep a water bottle near my bed since I get thirsty!
Re-read what I wrote: they ONLY drink water in the cups-- nothing wrong with that. With straw cups, you can't lie down and drink them, so no keeping them in the mouth or sucking to sleep. It's for waking up at night when they get thirsty, and it happens often. I see absolutely nothing wrong with them having a drink of water in the middle of the night.

I did reread it & you didn't write what you put in the cup until the previous post. you only wrote that he took a tumbler to bed. both of us know that enough people put milk or worse in sippies, straw cups or bottles at night, that it was a valid question.

I like the shorter playtex ones with handles (great no spill valves!), and the nuby straw one.

I do NOT like the other Nuby products. They are both impossible to sip (some strange vacuum phenomenon) and easy to spill. I know; it's strange.

Sorry! I made a mistake. It wasn't Avent I used for the straw cups. It was MUNCHKIN! They w3ere really good. You can get them in Target. I don't know where you live, but if you're in CH, Apple Drugs sells them as well.

I've used Klean Kanteen sippy (they have Avent sippy spout), and one by Thermos (it is sold in Baby'sRUs, its also metal. I use it for milk, keeps it cold)

I tried both of those. My 18 mo cant pick up the klean kanteen w/o dropping it lots b/c its heavy and has no handles. The thermos one leaked terribly out the sides.

There is a handle attachment sold for Klean Kanteen; we had it when my son was younger, and its not that heavy, really - most of the weight is the contents, so just don't fill it all the way.
Thermos one doesn't leak for us at all, and is pretty foolproof to screw on correctly. Maybe they differ batch to batch? For my daughter (she is 4) I have the thermos straw cup one, its nice too.

So how in the world do you clean straw sippy cups?

if you've used dr brown's bottles- they come with this little pipe cleaner thingy to clean the inserts. they would probably be perfect- but they only come with the bottles.

I have purchased Dr. Browns pipe cleaner thingy on eBay, very cheap. I'm sure they are available at stores or other online websites. They were very cheap, maybe $2 for 4....

Too add to my input of this thread, I started out using the Avent Trainer bottle set. Since my DS, 9 months of age, didn't want any sippy cup, and was only liking the Avent bottles, and I was getting SICK of cleaning the nipples of the bottles - I chanced upon the Avent Trainer bottle set at Target only (Not Walmart, K-Mart) (then on eBay)

ANYHOW, the trainer set (only this style known and avialable in USA as far as I know): http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2793400

The only thing it did was change the bottle nipple to a sippy spout. Which means, if you already have the Avent cups, you just pop out the spout and put it into your Avent bottle. Anyhow, it worked magic on DS 3 years ago and soon after that he accepted the regular Avent cup. Just make sure you close it good or it can leak/spill.

Must go now, will write more what sippy cups they are using now.

I bought several different types of sippy cups. The one we've had success with is the Avent Magic Cup.

Avent also has no BPA, and they are so far the best Ive tried of that type. They have interchangable spouts, handles, and sizes for different ages.

AVENT CUPS are BPA free; the bottles are not!

(Health Canada is about to issue a BPA warning, and AVENT has VOLUNTARILY) recalled their products...a new line will replace the current one. For those of you in Canada, you can take your AVENT bottles, sterilizers, etc...to Zellers/Sears/Bay and get a store credit.)

Which straw cups do you use? This sounds interesting while tonight is the first night I'm weaning DS off off diapers at night, due to the warm weather B"H!

To continue on with my previous posts, I got sick and tierd of all the cups with the attachments that you couldn't clean. From Playtex to Gerber cups, Nuby and what not. It irked me that I couldn't clean the little cracks easily, and sometimes cups just get LOST and when you find them, Oy Vey!

Finally I found the Take and Toss by The First Years - Insulated. Let me get the link to one of the cups.... http://www.ciao.co.uk/First_Years_Take_Toss_7_Oz_Insulated_Spill_Proof_Cups_2_Pack__6746366
I bought mine on eBay. But I started out with these: http://www.amazon.com/Spill-Proof-Cups-10oz-Lids/dp/B000096M59/ref=pd_sim_ba_img_1 - very cheap!

Anyhow, I like them (the kids too!) since there isn't any interesting attachments inside where things can hide and I can't get out. I use Dr. Browns cleaning brushes to get gunk out if it gets stuck inside, and I have no problems. The only thing is if you have a kid that likes to throw the cup all the time on the floor, then the top can pop off. The top is kind of hard plastic and the kids chew on it, but I've had them for about a year now and they still are fine! (But down to 3 out of 6 Embarassed somehow they got lost on outings)

I like the insulated ones cuz where I live in Israel it will keep the milk or juice/water cold on outings, or even warm if it's tea/chocolate milk. DD was using this cup from age 9-10 months old!

Good luck!

I just wanted to say that I used HY's advice about teaching to use a straw...
And at 8 months, uriel now knows how to suck from a straw very nicely. And makes much less of a mess than he does with his sippy cup or regular cup. (Regular cup he was taking from 4.5 mos, sippy cup from 5.5 mos.)

I'm not having much luck.

The closest we got was one with a soft spout (a tulip). But he bit it and now one of them leaks badly.

There's seems to be conflicting opinions of whether you need to get them off bottles by 15 months or it is okay up to age 3. Most of the older babies I see still have bottles.

I saw my cousin's son had a Tommy Tippee that had a soft spout, but was thinner, more like a straw....I think that's the one to try next. But I'm wondering if I should just let him be with his bottles.

I didn't see any BPA free avent bottles or sippy cups and I really looked because the alternative was the $17 I spent on one Born Free one. They are taking plastic sport bottles off the shelves for adults also.

The Nuby brand (also Luv N Care) are now BPA free.

I could only find the NUBY ones and not the Luv N' Care on eBay.
Approx what are the retail price? I will get them shipped to Israel.

Did you ever have to get the replacement straws? How long did they last you?

Some of the Nuby ones are a different type of straw, but some are the same...
I buy mine at National Wholesale Liquidator which has really low prices, so they are under $3 a cup (better than Walmart/Target). I never buy replacement straws; I just buy new cups. I'd say I use one milchig and one fleishig every 6 months or so. But I don't put in juice and if I use milk I wash them immediately after so they don't get sticky or moldy.

I found these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1-NIP-Nuby.....dZViewItem

Are those the same? The flip straw ones? Or does the flip not matter?

Here's the replacment straws:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1-NIP-Luv-.....dZViewItem

This is the only seller I found that will ship to Israel, so I'm happy about that. Do you think I'll be needing more of the replacement straws after about 6 months or an entire cup? What excatly needs replacing if I may ask?

These are a a bit different. They may work for you, but some kids have harder times with them. The straw tip itself needs clamping from the mouth instead of just sucking like a real straw. They don't leak if put in right, but sometimes it's hard to get it just so after washing them. Also parts of the straw are flatter, so it's harder to clean the inside of them.
If you wash the cups well, just the straw would probably need replacement, depending on how much it has been chewed on Wink
Now that I read the information on the replacement straw page, I'm wondering if the kind of cups I buy are the "older" type?
