Eating right means eating bread before you drink and continuously as you drink.

Drinking right means drinking DRY wine. Sweet wine will make you throw up. Dry wine is much better for not getting sick.

last time I checked, getting shikker was a) a very unJewish thing to do and b) not one of the 4 mitzvos connected to Purim. Ad D'lo Yada can be fulfilled in more acceptable ways, such as taking a nap.

The Emek Bracha brings Rabbi Yisrael Salanter's chidush in the obligation to drink ad d'lo yoda. Although it is commonly accepted that the word "ad" (until) in this context, refers to the shiur one has to reach to fulfill this mitzva (similar to saying one must eat matza at the seder until one consumes a k'zayis), R' Salanter maintains that the word "ad" is a shiur of ptur (like one must eat matza until one is forced to stop and just can't eat a full k'zayis, l'mashal).

I.e. one is required to drink all day until he forgets there is such a mitzva of ad d'lo yoda, when he is so drunk that he is exempt from mitzvos.

R' Itzele Blazer is the source for this explanation and he himself followed it.

The Sfas Emes in his chiddushim on meseches Megilla explains it the same way.

Sounds like your agenda supersedes what Torah greats have to say on the matter.

I just saw this thread now. I love when my husband is drunk on purim. I trust him bec. he knows his exact limit and stays within that so he is cute and funny but doesn't throw up or go too crazy. his pnimiyus really comes out and it is ruchniyus and torah.
we had a lot of modern (im writing this hesitatingly bec. I dont want to get killed for this) ppl at our seuda and they were really impressed and said they felt our seuda felt like real purim to them.
dh was saying lots of divrei torah, singing niggunim and dancing, praising me a lot for working so hard (I liked that Very Happy ) and making silly jokes. when someone came to collect tzedakkah he told everyone to give him money bec. its the best investment youll ever make, better than wall street. these ppl all work in finance so appreciated that
my bil on the other hand always ends up over the toilet bowl every purim and I'm not sure I would be so into my husabnd drinking if I thought that would be the case.

I don't know if it's necessary but that was the reality for Jews in Europe for centuries. The non jews spent what they earned on liquor. The Jews did not. Does that mean every single gentile? No. But it was true for the general populace. Does that mean every Jew did not? No. But it was true for the general populace.

Guess you don't have fervent religious non-Jews among your acquaintances! I remember reading in Ahuva Grey*'s book about her grandmother, a devout woman whose Bible was always at hand. There are many like her.

How many of us are old enough to remember and discuss the Eastern European non-Jews before WWII? I'm not. My mother doesn't remember her non-Jewish neighbors that way.

I was just kidding with that one, meaning that non-Jews don't speak specifically of "Hashem." I do have some religious non-Jewish friends who enjoy drinking. Can't recall them talking about G-d, but I can't speak of all non-Jews. I have one who does enjoy intense philosophical discussions when intoxicated, and another who does love to tell friends how wonderful they are, but I guess those examples aren't the same.

Never mind pre ww2. Its still like that in many low class places in Europe today. I take it you have never been to Gateshead in England so trust me on this one -if you look jewish, you don't want to be in the near vicinity of any pubs at night.

I don't doubt that there's a certain kind of person who may come from a culture where being a vulgar or obnoxious drunk is acceptable. I don't think this is true of all non-Jews, and I think it's unfair to say so. I have a very close friend whose family is very civilized Protestant and very fond of their cocktails. The first time I ate at their house I didn't know how to handle the nonstop parade of drinks. Before dinner, during dinner, after dinner, before bed, when sitting and reflecting, when chatting. Not one of them was sloppy or out-of-control, not one fight broke out. They were better behaved, in fact, than some alcohol-free Jewish families I know.

I don't want to get into class issues here, but I can say from personal experience that I know plenty of non-Jews who can hold their liquor without saying or doing anything inappropriate, and certain without vomiting.

Some people take pride in their ability to "hold their liquor". It's actually nothing to be proud of, as tolerance is usually developed as a result of ever-increasing intake. As the body becomes more and more accustomed to alcohol, the liver metabolizes it more efficiently. Thus it requires more and more alcohol to have the same neurological effect. In plain English, the more you drink, the more you have to drink to get high.

Maybe so, but my point was that there was nary a bar brawl or drunken pass. My other non-Jewish friends are the same. The earlier post about the musician and bar fights and the one about Gateshead pubs are both about certain kinds of people who enjoy drunken rowdiness. I'm not debating whether somebody is an alcoholic or not. I'm just disputing the notion that all non-Jews behave in a disgusting manner when intoxicated, but we're better than that.

Ah, so. True, there are all kinds of drunks: belligerent, violent ones; cheerful, hail-fellow-well-met ones; maudlin, blubbering ones; sick-as-a-dog-and-rolling-in-the-gutter ones; making-total-asses-of-themselves-wearing- their- BVD's- on- their- heads ones; getting-very-quiet-just-staring-at-the-world-around-them-ones; rowdy, whooping-it-up-but-not-doing-any-real-harm ones... and no group has a monopoly on any particular kind.

It's not about "all."

I just came across this:

Yalkut Shimoni on Megillas Esther says that when Jews drink, out comes Torah. When a gentile drinks, out come his negative inhibitions.

I'd like to be able to see this Medrash inside but don't have the precise page. If anybody finds it, please post.
