Silly question about a gas stove top

We've only been in our new house for a few months now so Pesach is our first 'holiday' here. We have a gas stove (well, the stove top is gas and the oven is electric). My hubby thinks we can leave a few burners on for the four days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday Monday) assuming we leave a pot of water on top. I don't think it's safe and would rather buy and electric range to plug in the wall instead.

Who's right? If you have a gas stove top, do you leave it on to cook on the yom tov?

I do to. I don't get the water thing either. if you don't want to leave more than one burner on but need more than one on yt, leave one on and light a second burner from that fire on yom tov.

we only leave one burner on for pesach. I don't cook so much on yomtov otherwise.

It wouldn't help anything really. Hubby just said that he'd put a pot of water on top so that the flame wouldn't be exposed.

So you just leave the burner on with the flame exposed? I've never had a gas stove before (I'm still not comfortable using it) and it just doesn't seem right to have the flame on for such a long time.

it's fine, don't worry. btw, if you've got a pilot light, you don't have to leave them on for shabbos. you can turn on a pilot lit burner on yom tov, so less worry for you.

We keep a blech over it. But it doesn't make a difference if it's open, anyway.

We also put a blech. On shabbos bec it's neccesary and y't bec I also don't like the open flame and that way I feel a little safer.

I second the blech idea - it is safer than an exposed flame and also you don't have to lleave all the burners on to keep a bunch of food watm. if you leave one burner on and cover with a blech the heat gets distributed and you can keep things warm without putting them on the fire.

actually the blech can suffocate the fire fyi ... so can a pot ... also electric things can be dangerous too ... then again so can breathing ...

just don't leave all the flames on ... and don't leave towels or other flammables nearby ...

oh - and please breath despite the pollution ...

That's what we do. And we leave a kettle full of water on the blech at all times. Both to have hot water for beverages and to act as a heat sink, which is what OP's dh is talking about. If you leave a blech on the flame with nothing to take up the heat, you can eventually actually burn through the blech, same way you'd burn a pot if you left it empty on a flame, b/c it gets hotter and hotter over time. With a vessel full of water, the heat goes into heating and evaporating the water, so the blech and the pot remain at a stable temperature as long as there's still water in the pot. You just have to be sure to refill the pot so it never runs dry.

Only if you leave the flame too low or plump the blech down too vigorously so it blows the flame out. Just check to make sure the flame is still going after you gently lower the blech into place, and check again after a few minutes to make sure it's still healthy. My flame usually goes higher after the blech is in place, but if it's really low to begin with it does sometimes go out shortly afterwards.

also you have to put things gently onto the blech. If you dump a huge heavy pot down on it, the resulting gust of air underneath can also blow out the flame.

A person from the gas company went to a person I know and told her that she cant leave the burners on for longer than like 2 hours at a time cuz the metal or whatever on the burners disintegrates and then you have carbon monoxide. Just letting you all kno, I'm still going to use my blech.

carbon monoxide from metal? I don't think so. you'd only get CO from organic, IOW carbon-containing, material. Now if he had said metal oxides, that might make sense. But I've owned several stoves and nowhere in any owner's manual did it say you can't use the burners for longer than 2 hours.
