anyone ever hear of the nickname SHANA for shoshana??

ye my name is shoshana but everyone besides my parents call me shana!!

I've heard either Shoshi, Shosh, or Shana.

I think in Israel people use Shoshani, but a friend of mine here in the US (her name is Shoshana) told me that its not good to use "Shoshani" because that's the name of an Indian tribe.

Yep, got a Shana friend, think it's a cute name. Most of the others nicknames are already mentioned above.

Esti S... I'm sure I could have been clearer in my post about avoiding the nickname Shoshani because its assosciated with an Indian tribe and therefore Avodah Zara...

We are talking about a person's name - how they're called in B'nei Yisrael - not just an inanimate object like a coin box. I can see why someone would prefer to avoid an association with avodah zarah in that context.

BTW, even if you thought my first post was pointless or wrong, why would you respond with blatant rudeness?

Why not just say "Even when a name means something in another language, its usually OK to use it in Yiddishkeit, anyway" or something nicer like that?

DH & I are considering this name & we'll call her Shani. Now, I think I like Shana too.

I have a Shoshana, and yes we do cal her Shana. When she was a baby , we sometimes called her Shushi, and sometimes DH calls her Shush the Tush Laughing

I am Shoshana (duh) and have been called many many different names!
When I was very little my parents and extended family called me Shani.
In school it was Shosh (and still is today at work and in social settings)
