it was my father's bubbie's name | no idea. but it's definitely a Russian nickname for Maria. (Masha) My sil is named Masha after her grandmother (who was masha Chasha, but my mil had pity and just took the Masha part)

| just to add about the yiddishe name "yente/yenta," - to my understanding, it was a very pareve name until some yiddish newspaper reporter (can't remember the name) invented a character named "yenta telebenta." this "yenta" character was a gossip, and that's how the name got it's associations.

yenta/yentel is from Old French "gentille", meaning (at that time only) noble.
masha is russian that got integrated into yiddish. Many non Jews have names that were integrated into yiddish/ladino/judeo arabic. I met an old non Jewish Zlata recently, and in the Middle Ages there were plenty Gitta, Golda... _________________

According to the website below, Masha is a Yiddish feminine version of "Moshe". They both mean to "drawn out" [of the water].

| The Mashas I know told me it's from Miriam (-> Maria -> Mariasha -> Masha), and some actually have Miriam as Hebrew name and Masha as Yiddish. Maybe it depends.

Rasha is yet another name I never understood how Jewish children ended up with. I guess I should google the name too and find out what else it means (besides the Hebrew translation)
OK, I tried the site I'd previously listed, but they didn't have it. Could anyone enlighten me as to the meaning of the name "Rasha" and why one would name their child such? I'm sure that it must mean something wonderful in another language or people wouldn't be using it.

Thanks for the explanation Ruchel! Unfortunately, the links aren't working. Could you perhaps edit them so that they do?

The pronunciation of names changes over generations, and the people who used these names didn't know Hebrew very well, either. Foreign nicknames get mixed in, and people forget what the person's original name was.

I don't know why they come up like this, and I never manage to change them... just copy and paste them!
The Rasha I know is rah-shah.
