ever wonder why a wandering jew is called that ... my mother used to call me the wandering jew because I would wander from different houses for shabbos ... at least she didn't call me a weeping willow ... or perhaps she would have thought me like a depressed tree instead of a wild carefree plant ...

I assumed it was because it's hardy, underappreciated, thrives anywhere, makes its surroundings a more beautiful place, and takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.

The Wandering Jew, according to Christian folklore, was a Jew who taunted Yoshke on the way to the crucifixion. As a punishment, he was condemned to wander the earth until the Second Coming.

Walter Miller's book "A Canticle for Leibowitz," (an interesting read) is a story set out over a period of several hundred years, that has the Wandering Jew as a minor character.

True, but considering the fact that *all* Jews wandered in the wilderness for forty years, saying "wandering Jew" would be redundant.

The term only first became widespread about 800 years ago.

Jews as a people have been wandering ever since the destruction of the Second Temple. We've never fond a true resting place or home in any country that wasn't ours, because we could be--and have been--kicked out of most of them at one point or another. Christians claim it's proof of the divinity of that man, as Tammy said.

well, if anyone has a healthy wandering jew plant and can spare a few cuttings, I'll gladly take 'em. had a perfectly gorgeous one in a windowbox many years ago--the key to success was diligently pinching out the growing tips so it grew bushy, not leggy. Not sure what happened to it but I don't have it any more!
