How do I know when my babies need a drink of water rather than a bottle of formula? Is it okay to give half-strength bottles, rather than a water bottle?

Formula fed babies can get thirsty...if she's eating on a schedule then in between she should get water. A nursing baby just nurses more.

Do not water down your formula. This can get very problematic as you can lose track of the amt. the baby is getting and then they can have issues. I breatfed baby and had a very big baby so doc said it was ok in the summer to give about an ounce of water each day to baby when he was young. Ask your dr.

water isn't recommended before 6 months, it's hard to digest that young.

Thanks for your replies.

Marion - I know all about nursing babies - this whole bottle thing is new to me!! They don't really have a schedule for the daytime, but I am assuming that if they are appearing to be hungry an hour or so after a feed, that's just thirst. Right?

Mimisinger - I don't mean watering down every bottle. For example yesterday I put 2 scoops of formula in a 3-scoop bottle, twice. Is that okay?

MosheDovid'sMom - why not? I make their formula up using cooled boiled water, so why should it be more dangerous as a stand-alone drink?

Again, thanks for all your help.
I really want to know when to give water. It's not that hot here!

I don't know why. maybe there is s/t in the formula that helps or maybe its not preferable and if you're nursing you shouldn't but if you are anyways formula feeding it makes no difference.

they have those little ready bottles of water for infants ... I remember getting some from the hospital ... so I can't imagine water not being good ... a picky baby though just might refuse to drink any ... and if that is the case I hear your point of watering down 1 bottle just for baby to get some water ... did you try a water bottle yet ...

if my son was very fussy between feedings, breastfed, I would give him water.
