pickle - my allergic-to-milk son loves lentils & rice! Lentils - not lentil soup - lentils cooked with sauteed onion & garlic, mixed with tomato paste (or canned tomatoes) and cumin. (You could use a lentil soup recipe - just add much less water.)

What are people serving for before and after the fast? I always get stuck on this one.

It shouldn't be something festive, so we have a 'tradition' to eat pareve chicken flavour soup with kneidlech and fine noodles before the fast. Satisfies to no end.

Before fast I'm gonna do a barley vegetable soup, whole grain bread, baked salmon or breaded flounder.

For suppers I am really stuck, since no one in my family me included likes cheese

it seems to me not really in the spirit of the 9 days to be serving extra expensive gourmet dairy foods (eg penne a la vodka, made with parmesan, cream and vodka)

I make plenty of non meat meals during the year and during the 9 days too: mac and cheese, salmon, breaded and baked or fried cod or other white fish, lentil shepherds pie, pasta with marinara sauce and cheese, lasagna, quiche, frittata, pizza, veggie schnitzle.

Most cheese is as expensive as meat, and 3x as expensive as chicken! But a little vodka and 1/2 cup of parmesan doesn't up the cost that much, and is certainly much less than the cost of making a lasagna or pizza.

We usually eat pareve during the week anyway + one real milchig night (like lasagna or pizza) + one milchig-ish night like pancakes. We usually only have one meat meal during the week, so our routine doesn't change all that much during the 9 days!

I think I'll copy you! But probably with some kind of southern whole fish like mullet or snapper or whiting. YUM. I haven't made barley in ages and I love barley! We eat lots of beans and fish and not much dairy either. Smile

YUMMY AVACADO VG WRAP

Sliced avacado
roasted vgs-red and green peppers, eggplant, onion (either in the broiler, oven or my fave bbq!)
fresh sliced tomatos
mayo
Kens honey-mustard dressing
Soft tortilla (Ortega now makes kosher soft tacos!!!)

spread torilla with mayo and top with vgs and avacado(generous amount!) add tomatoes and sprinkle with dressing. Roll up and ENJOY!

Other days I add grilled chicken!

This sounds like tonight's supper, but what's Ken's honey-mustard dressing?

I haven't seen Ken's in a long time. That was a good dressing. I didn't think they made it anymore.

I have the lite too, but I am assuming they still make all of it.
