I've been randomly selected to give a talk on healthy cooking/eating options for the tight-budgeted-many-children-time-challenged-frum family. It's a talk on how to promote healthy eating and nutrition for these types of families with loads of tidbits and tips on how to do this without tearing your sheitel hairs out.

A) ARE YOUA HEALTHY MAMA? THEN YOU CAN HELP ME!
B) HAVE YOU EVER GIVEN THIS TYPE OF TALK B4? THEN YOU CAN REALLY HELP ME!
C) GOT ANY AMAZING TIPS OR RECIPES FOR LOW FAT/ LOW SUGAR MEALS? YOU ARE ALSO ON THE BANDWAGON OF HELPERS!
D) DO YOU HAVE OPINIONS ON THIS ISSUE? I WILL HEAR YOU OUT!

PLEASE HELP! THE LIVES OF MANY OF OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS WILL BE ENRICHED BY YOUR ASSISTANCE.

Thank you in advance - I can't wait to hear from you!!!

hm ... simple meal ... breakfast is always eggs & can be whole wheat bread ... not expensive and gives you the best energy boost of the day and helps you think and function better ...

drink water and eat fruit instead of juice ... more filling and we get our H2O at the same time ... cheaper too ... so long as one doesn't buy the water ...

do I get points Wink

Talk about not giving kids junk food, and making food from scratch.

There is an awesome website that has a book, let me see if I cana find it, you may be able to find some hints from them.

www.livingonadime.com

Of course, much of what they have is treif, but it can be adapted.

I'm a family practice doctor and a frum mommy and give talks often on this topic. I'll be happy to give you tips.
To start, I have recently started my own blog of healthy recipes (its a brand new site, but there are some yummy ideas for kids treats, especially this one: http://www.refuashaguf.com/fruit-popsicles-your-kids-wont-know-these-are-healthy/)

My quick advice is:
Avoid cereal if you can.
Teach your kids to drink water - not juice, not soda.
Place cut up veggies and dips on the table before you serve dinner (that way they are hungry and reach for them first)
Make your own ice cream (its really easy, see my recipe - http://www.refuashaguf.com/chocolate-ice-cream-with-hints-of-ginger-and-cinammon/) and other treats, so they don't feel deprived when you don't let them eat junk.

We love shakes at my house.
Our breakfast shake is easy and really keeps you going. Its got:
Organic whole milk yogurt (we all need probiotics and good fat)
Banana
Frozen organic berries (full of antioxidants)
Raw almonds or walnuts (good fats and proteins)
Ground up flax seeds (omega 3 fatty acids, and great for digestion - also great for mommies and daddies, as it is hormone balancing)
Coconut milk or rice or almond milk

My three year old daughter drinks it every morning and its sometimes my only chance to fill her up on good nutrition.
I'll be happy to talk to you more. You can contact me via my site.
Hatzlacha raba - this is so important and so necessary!!!

ruach, the thread dates back to July 2007. I think the OP already gave her talk. I haven't seen her screenname around of late so chances are she doesn't even live here any more.

Not that your advice isn't helpful for the rest of us, but it's not going to help klotzkashe with her speech.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm new to this site and overlooked that. Hopefully the info helps others.
