Totally agree with the above.

I'm still going about my life, and I wouldn't think anyone should cancel a trip, but I do understand if a person does. It's scary. You don't live here, so it's not like you're talking about measures that would cripple your life. You have to do what ultimately will be the best for you. Just weigh it really carefully, remembering the other side that people have pointed out.

So sorry. I didn't mean to give a guilt trip. I live in Israel and I know what it means to be afraid. I also know that it's still safer than New York city.

I'm sorry but that's just silly. There are dangerous areas of NYC, sure, but in general, in the Jewish areas, people are safe. Way safer than Israel.

Homicidal terrorists haven't been running over anyone in BP or Monsey lately. Nor chopping heads open.

I would go in a heartbeat... But I live here already!

I feel that with everything that's going on, we just have to put our full trust in Hashem. He's watching over us, and he has a plan for us. If I carry about my life as usual, and not put myself in unnecessary danger, then I just have to trust that Hashem is going to watch over me. I refuse to let them instill fear in me and have control over me. I will still walk around, take buses, go on the light rail, go to shul, etc.

A bunch of parents who send their girls on my daughter's school bus (which is run by Egged), pulled them out and arranged a private hasaah. They are worried about the off chance that they will have an Arab driver that decides to take advantage of the situation... I think it's ridiculous to live my life like that. I should stop sending my daughter on a school bus? How is that not just giving in to fear...

To each their own, but if it was me, I absolutely would still go.

Anonymous, because I discussed the bus situation with a lot of people...

Yeah, but there were several violent anti-Semitic incidents in NYC this past year. And the whole knock-out game phenomenon a few months ago. And random violence and street crime is much worse there than in Israel.

I feel pretty comfortable walking around at all hours of the night here. Not so much in NYC...

I hope you are not suggesting that if the most recent attack had been at a theater in Tel Aviv you wouldn't care, because no one you know would have been there.

When a child was brutally murdered in Boro Park, there weren't a lot of calls for people to stay away. Horrific things happen everywhere, even to frum people. That's the terrible truth.

But we as a nation have been given a land. To turn your back on the land and its people is profoundly ungrateful to the One who gave it to us.

OP or a mod, please change the subject to read "Israel". It is not acceptable for Jewish person to misspell Israel.

Well, I get to put my money where my mouth is. My dh is being flown to Israel (he's accompanying a Rav who was asked to be mesader kedushin). Remember I said I'd go if someone gave me a ticket?! Wish the Rav would need a COUPLE as an escort, instead of just my husband!!!
Am I nervous? Yes, but more about how I'm going to manage carpool and pickup and work without my husband home. I'll be so busy worrying about logistics, I won't have time to worry about anything else........
Now, does anyone want to sponsor ME so I can go too?????

I don't understand why ELAL doesn't have any deep DEEP discounted tickets to promote travel TO Israel.

I would 100% plan a trip to Israel IF I COULD AFFORD IT!!!

I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING how tourism to Israel is down and yet ELAL doesn't promote any cheap flights so people of average incomes can FINALLY plan a trip to Israel.

Instead people like me plan local vacations or quick trips to Florida-IF the price is right on the airfare.
Last time I flew for $230 round trip on Virgin.

Now, I understand ELAL can't offer tickets in that price range but would it kill them to have a few $450 flights roundtrip during the month of January???!

Just saying...

FYI I have a student whose family flew to Israel last week for the older son's Bar Mitzvah and they were scheduling the Bar Mitzvah in Chevron.

I've noticed in gerenral in Israel that prices are less affected by the usual rules of sullpy and demand. There is some sort of holdover from fhe more socialist-influenced era here whereby people charge *higher* prices during times of low demand because, after all, times are rough, so *they* (the sellers) need the money more.

ElAl is Israel's airline but it is privately owned. ElAl came through for us during Tzuk Eitan when most foreign airlines refused to fly to Israel leaving hundreds of Israelis stranded in foreign countries.

1- There are cheaper ways to fly with stopovers. (my friend just flew to Montreal with Turkish air - they even give a second suitcase for free)

2- There are much cheaper flights on ElAl from now till Pesach prices come up (that's the supply and demand). ($869 to NY, Toronto or LA now)

OP, I understand very well people who wish they could visit Israel (to show support) and really can't afford the price of the tickets but how can you expect our country to help you out with your vacation?
Quote:
Israel has the fourth-highest poverty rate among developed countries, according to a United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report.
We need people who don't live here to come spend money to help our economy not for us to spend money to bring them.

The government doesn't own ElAl and ElAl is a competitive suffering airline business just like all other airlines.

May I point out that that hasn't happened in my neighborhood - or in almost any neighborhood here in Israel? And I can take public transportation in the middle of the night, walk around my neighborhood alone in the middle of the night, walk to and from the mikvah in the middle of the night.... What else?
This is one of the hardest things for me to adjust to on visits to the US- that I really can't just go out at night.

Because they are an israeli airline who rip off their customers wherever and whenever possible.

Whenever I have the option of NOT traveling El Al, even if it means an extra stop, I take it.

It always gets me far better service, and I save money too.

El Al, apart from safety (though let's face it, when's the last time any plane to or from Israel was hijacked or blown up?) is a horrible airline to fly with.

And don't get me started on their frequent flyer program.

They just have nno clue how to be a world class airline. Or don't care.

I love traveling with ElAl. I feel at home.
Sorry but I would recommend you leaning the Parscha of the Meraglim and how they talked about Eretz Israel.
As I tell my kids. Say whatever you want to, but say it with respect

I dislike all airlines. El Al is no worse than most.

I prefer their security and easily available kosher food. And I don't have to worry about subtle anti-Semitism from the flight crew. I feel more at home on El Al than on foreign airlines. And I am supporting the Israeli economy.

I try to fly them whenever possible.

Why are you amother? Everybody has bad airplane stories. Why are you embarrassed to use your SN? Personally I like flying ElAl cause I feel more at home in Israel than NY, but do fly other airlines even with stops to save money. But why such anger? Can't take your problem seriously if you're embarrassed to use your SN. For all we know, you work for Delta and are just bad mouthing ElAl Wink

I may be wrong, and I hope I am, but it seems you are implying that there is a connection between ELAL being an Israeli airline and the fact that they make a habit of 'ripping off their customers".
Personally, I find that offensive.

My DH is a frequent flyer who was staunchly loyal to El Al for many years. Eventually he was worn down by their prices (consistently higher than other airlines) but mainly by their poor treatment of him - and this when he was at their highest level of FF.

Yes yes yes. I am flyiing to Israel for the wnter break Of course OP I understand your concern, especially if you look at the reporting shown on international tv etc.

We have had kids in Yeshiva/doing military service, our youngest is there right now. Life in Europe not a piece of cake either, I do not like it when my kids travel out of London with a kippa, we have had a number of anti semtic incidents, the latest was a ds doing his duty as a junior dr and being asked by a patient's father to not touch their child, as they did not want a jew to manhandle their offspring. it could have got violent, my ds backed away, no point in having a confrontation in A&E!

Israel on the whole is a safe place to walk about at night and the atmosphere there is like no other, every country has its issues, at moment fear of terrorism is making the headlines, in reality many countries have worrying crime rates and no go areas which tourists are warned to avoid.

A family simcha is a really special thing, if you cannot enjoy it Op then bow out gracefully, as tension or anxiety is nobody's friend, personally I think there is no need to cancel anything, but if you fly out do so with a good heart and enjoy the party!
