The FAA banned flights for 24 hours. Maybe they know something we don't, they want to reassess following recent events and take it day by day, etc.

The cancellations have more to do with the Malaysia plane being shot down over the Ukraine than with actual knowledge or evidence that Hamas have surface to air missiles. Typical reactionary behavior.

I get so frustrated, on the one hand the nations of the world say stop attacking Gaza, and condemn Israeli action, on the other they are so fearful of Gazan rockets (well, it is not the Israeli army attacking Ben Gurion!) that they won't even land. So which is it, ok for Israel to live under fire but not safe for anyone else Confused

My understanding is that this is standard policy -- the FAA issues its initial decision which automatically stands for 24 hours, and during that time they investigate and decide on a more long term decision. They have UP TO 24 hours to determine if they want to extend the recommendation or let it expire at the end of the period. So the 24 hours is not a specific decision about that time frame, just the way the procedure works.
