I usually take care of everything much earlier, but somehow this year I didn't and it's erev Pesach and I'm feeling really stressed. Is there anything wrong with asking for an extension? Is there a penalty? Is it too late? I don't owe anything, I'll be filing for a refund when I do file.

No big deal, especially if you don't owe anything anyway. I've done it.

No penalty, just make sure you file the form on time and you get automatic 6 months. If you do owe any money, it must be paid now, or else you'll have to pay interest and late fees.

I don't owe money so I want to file an extension, no way I can finish up in time because I have some business calculations to make and some questions I need to figure out and oh right making Pesach. Don't know what got into me this year, I'm usually done taxes by March.

Thing is, all the instructions seem to say you can e-file the extension form online, but I can't figure out how! All the links just take you back to the PDF you can print and mail. How/where do you efile? Even through other sites/programs, tried Turbo Tax and HR Block, they all SAY you can efile but when you click on it it's the same PDF with no instructions of where to e-send it, just "Choose whether to efile or print and mail." but no clue how to e-file!!!

This is pretty important because not only is it erev Pesach but I don't have a working printer.

I efiled an extension (federal and state) through TaxAct.com with no charge. (They will charge when I finish up and file)

But HOW? All I keep seeing is links to the PDF with no instructions where to send it!
Does that include state or only federal?

Thanks a million, questioner - you saved me an erev Pesach trip to a print shop and post office! It worked on TaxAct! Very Happy

Still slightly anxious because it says I can't get the status of the state file for a few days, by which time it will be too late. Federal already confirmed acceptance. Any idea what happens if it doesn't go through?
