BEST! we delivered mishloach manos to my son's rebbe, and his wife gave my daughter (who escorted him in the house- I was parked) a slurpee like cup and straw filled with chocolate milk! the first thing she had eaten that day. The Mrs. drizzled chocolate syrup down the sides of the plastic cup, and put chocolate milk inside... YUMMM.. we all took a long swig!

Best mm from our neighbor:

Yummy garbanzo bean salad, homemade mini yeast rolls, banana bread, a bar of good dark chocolate.

The presentation wasn't fancy, there was no clever "theme" (not a big thing in my neck of the woods), but the food was yummy and varied and thoughtfully selected.

The rav of the shul dh davened in purim morning had a huge jug of ice coffe and a stack of wrapped pasteries. At the end of davening he filled up cups (with covers and straws) and handed them out with the pasteries. DH loved the idea.

Best:
Breakfast (delivered early morning) - long prezel rolls with dips (cheeses, avocado and tuna) and some salad with dressing. DH and I enjoyed it immensely. Perfect breakfast.

A basket with some mezonot home made rolls and 2 small salads (egg salad, couscous salad) and some cookies and chocolate milk. Perfect lunch!

A gorgeous tray with freshly baked, yummy, 'alfachores' cookies. Perfect dessert.

Home made pizza with pizza sauce on the side. Yum!

Nothing too bad this year - just lots of eww candies which no one eats by us. Gave most of it away to ppl with kids.

Best: when people take time and effort out of their busy lives to put together a gift basket just for me and deliver it to my doorstep

Worst: when people complain anonymously online about the gifts they've been given

Some people made great baked goods but sadly were not able to give us for kashrus reasons, so they gave us bought stuff instead. My house looks like an israeli candy shop, we have tons of elite chocolate.

I gave out hard cheese, cherry tomatoes, some little packs of melba toast and mini halvas for dessert. None of that goes bad too quickly, even if left out for several hours. The best part is the extra stuff we didn't give out is food we like! A few people told me it was the best MM they got. (ok, not too much competition here Smile )

Everyone gave me nice stuff, some nicer then others. One person gave me a tub of pareve ice cream which is handy for shabbos. We didn't get so much that we are overwhelmed with junk - I won't have to buy shabbos treats till pesach.

Junk, junk, and more junk == worst.

Unfortunately, the only "real" food we got this year were a few rolls with chumus, and 1 yogurt. The homemade baked goods I put in the freezer for Shabbos, and we'll enjoy them, but I missed getting vegetables/salads/soups/kugels, etc something I could eat that was filling on Purim itself Sad

I would love to give those types of things but honestly it would take me ages to make 30 kugels or veg platters ( just for adult MM) how do you guys have the time???

I made a tomato/basil thin spaghetti salad that was well enjoyed from what I heard. I would have loved to get something similar in return Wink

I like the pasta idea, I'm thinking I might go with that next year. It's economical, yummy, doesn't go bad quickly and transports well.

This year I did all (relatively healthy) packaged foods. I also received less homemade food than in previous years.

I gave out a package of mini rice cakes, 2 mini rolls (homemade) and tiny, separately packaged (by the store) portions of peanut butter and halvah spread + a small jar of coffee.

Best received: A Moroccan friend sent me a big round container with different homemade salads (beets, potato, cabbage, corn and mushroom etc.) and techina in the middle + 2 big rolls. It was a great lunch!
Another neighbor sent me (at about 8:00 am) a plate with a pyramid of vanilla puddings + a small jar of coffee.
Another one sent a container with 4 compartments of vegetables + a tiny container of cottage cheese + a tiny container of white cheese + a bag with tiny crackers. Lunch for DH.

Worst: Can't remember + a jar of the worst coffee on this planet that doesn't even taste like bad coffee.
Another one - A couple of good things + a cheap, cheap wine decanter with which I have NOTHING to do.

I gave lunch and heard that many people ate it either on Purim or on Shushan Purim. Assorted home made rolls and bread sticks, dips, and carrots.

On Purim during lunch time I took all the slightly healthy stuff we had received and put in on the table and told my kids it was lunch. they were happy to eat it because it was m'm. We had chummus, bread, arbis, bread sticks, salad, strawberry drink, etc. It was fun.

I gave potato kugels this year. I made 25 and honestly it was way too much work. I never want to see a potato again! Only 4 pans fit into my oven at a time so took forever. And freezing potato kugel gives it a funny taste, so I made them all fresh saturday night. Giving junk food is alot less work, so will probably go back to doing that next year!

there are plenty of alcoholic beverages that don't require a marking. there are kashrus lists of these items. certain drinks do not need to be listed, either. we've gotten very fancy alcohol that was not marked, not an item for which markings/listings was unnecessary, AND not listed. psa: frum liquor stores DO sometimes sell non-kosher beverages. do your research. at least ask the salesperson about the drink if you are unfamiliar with it. when in doubt, buy an old familiar classic.

Just to let you know, my husband bought some mini liquer bottles, which he bought in boro park to add to our shalach manos. I was upset, as I didn't see any hechsher. Sure enough, he showed me that they actually had tiny, almost microscopic hechsherim. Sometimes you need a magnifying glass.

Snow themed MM was very cute - snowman bag with marshmallows and other things having to do with cold and ice. But it was accompanied by a 3- PAGE LONG RETELLING OF THE MEGILLAH. Lady, where is your editor? Rolling Eyes

And I had to finish up my chometz stock from stocking up on yoshon Wink
I was able to make it (a triple batch to make about 30 containers) while my husband was at megillah Motzei Shabbos.

A bottle of grape juice and a bag of cookies from someone who has a hard time over purim but you can smile at when you see them and give them a shalach manot and make them happier means more to me than the overdone ones.
Or the "I threw in some candy and a hamentash with a few other goods just so I have something to give" which I look at as baal tashchis.

I find smaller is nicer. All those extra "fillers" and junk stuff get thrown out alot anyway, so why waste the money? I understand people dont have time to patchke and cakes, kugels etc. can be a hassle. But there is homemade or healthier that will get eaten or junk that will get thrown out. A small salad, a container of soup (make a huge batch or 2), granola bars, little packs of Hummus or guacamole, rolls, animal crackers, a drink. A little thinking ahead and there is so much to do without all the garbage thats "easier".

All that being said, we dont see any as "best or worst", we just appreciate that people thought of us! and its also why we give out more than we need to to let others know we thought of them.

Working on no sleep, so hope that all made sense.... Smile
