All of the kids in my kids' classes have mothers who....let them eat whatever they want, go to sleep whenever they want, buy them whatever they want, etc...I'm the only mean mother who has any rules whatsoever.....
In any case, lots of people I know spend a bit more (sometimes not! I've gotten great deals) on durable briefcases that last from year to year.
My DD will be using her LLBean briefcase this year for the 3rd year in a row. It looks new.
Other DD will be using her lands-end briefcase for the 2nd year (she actually got it two years ago mid-year, so it's sort of the 3rd year). Again, it's in like-new condition.
I try to get them some new items each year so they feel fresh and new at the beginning of the school year. A fun trip to Target for new markers, crayons, and notebooks to put into her old briefcase gives them that new feeling. They also got new shoes, which they are saving for the first day of school (though their sneakers really need to go by now....) _________________ Chayalle

if its still good my kids use the old one.
I was very happy with childrens place it lasted 2 years, it broke at the end of the year it was hard finding another one then. I bought one from amazon, dd has a new one this year and her old one is for back up.
lands end can go either. way my son's was annoying the zipper kept on getting stuck and the bottom is broken. the other lands end is still good but of course its lost in school
my back pack lasted 10 years I used it throughout high school and seminary, it was from eddie bauer

I'm a fan of getting the sturdy lands end or ll bean ones too, although I do remember having fun with a new cheap one each year when I was little.
what about getting a new luggage tag or zipper pull or decal or pin of some sort to spruce up last year's bag? that would save a heap of money but might seem fun enough to tide them over.
Here's a website with craft ideas for how to refresh an older bag: http://www.artistshelpingchildren.org/howtodecorateschoolbags-backpackscraftskids.html _________________ http://crunchyandkosher.blogspot.com/

My son is on his fourth year of his Lands End backpack (sale for 10 bucks) but next year he will have a new one (already bought from LE on sale) as he'll need bigger.
Believe me, he's plenty excited without a new one. In fact, he's still not sleeping now because of school starting tomorrow and being too excited.... _________________ http://a-natural-birth.com

| The rule in our family is that you use a bag for 4 years. We started it with our oldest DD and that is just how it is. No one has ever even asked to have a new one if it hasn't been 4 years. We get them good quality bags like Modan that usually are still looking so good when it comes time to replace them that I'm tempted to push it off. However, even I realize that you can't expect a kid to use that Barbie or Superman tik that you bought for Kita aleph indefinitely.

| I wish I could find bags that lasted more then one year! I got gap bags for 2 of my kids and they would have lasted but one lost it 2 months into the year, the other left it in camp. Another kids broke and another is just starting school. So I had to buy 4 new ones... At least my oldest was quite happy to keep using hers from a year and half ago.
