It is a solid, not healthy kind of shortening (solid white mass) that comes either in sticks or in a can. In the original recipe, it only comes out really well if you use the Crisco. I've made it with margarine, and the texture wasn't right (though it might be acceptable if you don't know how it comes out with Crisco). If you don't want to use Crisco, use a different recipe, not this one.
