Has anyone gone through COPE's Junior Accounting program? What was your experience? How are you using that certification now? What IS a junior accountant (I never even heard of that term until I saw COPE ads).

And most importantly:

WHY wouldn't you because a "real" full-fledged accountant?

As far as I know, in order to go for regular accounting through Cope you first have to take the Junior Accounting.

I know someone did did the course and got a job as a bookkeeper, and now is doing their program to lead to a CPA. Seems like a good way to go for someone who needs to work sooner.

I also know someone like that. I personally took the COPE course. I thought it was great. We learnt alot, and I was able to get a job as Assistant Controller. I filed taxes that were looked over by the Controller. I dealt with payroll, and other stuff like that. The next job I had was Bookkeeper of a small company. Basically I did all accounting/bookeeping functions except for actually filing the return. I was able to demand a higher salary than some HS graduate who took quickbooks in 12th grade.
Yes, I could have continued on to a CPA but I knew I wanted to be a SAHM so I didnt think it was practical to go for extra schooling, pay for college etc. if I wasnt going to use it long enough to be worthwhile.

Right now, I dont use my certification at all since I run a business out of my home; but I am certainly glad to have the knowledge so that I can take care of the bookeeping, payroll, and tax filing for my business.

I also did Jr accounting and then the CPA program, which I haven't completed yet. It's correct that in order to continue through COPE you have to do Jr accounting first.

When you finish with Jr accounting you can do more than the typical bookkeeper, but at the same time they really really push the CPA track, and I think they might have pushed it perhaps a bit much.

At the same time I am happy I'm doing the CPA track program. It's an expensive investment, but price-wise it's probably comparable to other schools given that you end up with 150 credits, a BA and an eligibility to take the CPA exam.

I started a degree program years ago and part of me wanting to do this is to finally complete it.

for the ladies who took this course, were there men in your class? or, in a mirror class? meaning is this a "glorified secretary" type of thing, where any man would be laughed at for trying to get this kind of job, or is it something men can and do also do?

Don't you need 150 credits to be certified in virtually every state?

To answer OP, I think junior accountants do "small business" or "outsource" accounting - somewhere between bookkeeper and regular accountant.

To answer amother above, I know one man who went through the course, and I think he was in a separate male only class (meaning, there is a demand for men to do this). I have no idea if he found a job, however.

Yup - by now all (or nearly all) states require 150 credits in order to sit for the CPA exam. I am personally not aware of any state that has not yet adopted this. For me it worked out nice and convenient as I got credits from seminary in E"Y so by the time I finished all the required courses to graduate w/ a BS in accounting I had 150 credits.

I still don't really understand the distinction of "junior accountant" versus "regular accountant" and have concluded that it's a frum course thing because I've never heard it in the professional world. I think what sparked the thread was when I was interviewed for Binah magazine Profiles in Parnassah column when they featured accounting. They also interviewed the director of COPE for information about the program and honestly (unfairly or not; I really don't have enough information to offer an opinion) my first reaction was - why sell our girls short? Why not have them become full fledge accountants, even if they may work minimal or part time hours. As a CPA you can command a higher salary than a "junior accountant" I imagine and if you are going to be working 20 hours a week and are leaving your baby w/ a sitter why not get paid as the professional you are? My critique may not be fair, though, as a poster did say that they encourage the CPA.

My point was the price is probably comparable. I didn't mean to suggest that in other states you don't need 150 credits. I think some states might even ask for a master's.

Either way, the Junior accounting is a lot less time and the lady who helps people find jobs works really hard to help people.

Which program?

The junior accounting when I took it was $4700. There might be resources to help pay for that. I know that for Crown Heights residents there was one.

The CPA program is at least $20,000 because aside from paying them you're also paying for CLEP / DANTES / JSE exams to complete the degree.

I now work for Aguda - in part for the COPE program.

Right now, COPE only offers the Jr. Accounting program for women in September. They are completely independent of the men's classes. There is a higher demand for men's classes, so they are offered several times a year.

Jr. Accounting is a certificate level program - in 3-5 months you are ready to work as a Junior Accountant or bookkeeper. There is no shortage of jobs out there for the women who complete our course! (The men do well too - but more men = more competition for jobs).
Bashinda's info about the pricing is correct. I will add that there is TAP/PELL available for those who are in the degree track.
The best way to find out more is to call us at (718) 506-0500 x208 or attend the open house on Sunday, June 10, 2012, Women from 12-2.

There are a few states that do not require 150. California is one, but only if you pass the cpa before 2014.

20k is a rip off if you don't get a degree from them. You can go to a community college/state school for 5-10k. Some even have online classes if you want.

The CPA track program awards a Bachelors degree.
Our focus is providing a top level education in a frum environment. Many people feel this is a worthwhile investment.

junior accounting at cope is basically the first two or three regular accounting courses that one would take if they were in college majoring in accounting.
(plus in cope they add some accounting computer skills like quickbooks and excel)

therefore if you only do cope jr. accounting your jobs will be bookeeping and some basic level accounting work.

its a good thing if your looking for that type of job.

if your interested in fullfledged accounting you need to continue the whole cope program or see if you can transfer to a regular accounting program in another college.

This week (yesterday's issue) of Binah magazine has an article/advertorial for COPE's junior accounting and CPA track. It actually is impressive the way it is presented (especially when everyone they interviewed was placed in great jobs Smile and I am so happy that this field is being presented in such a positive light to frum women. You will not believe how many times I tell people I am a CPA only to get a blank stare back and disbelief that a frum woman would choose this field.

I was considering COPE for quite a while now. But reading up on it now, it seems people are saying it's a dressed up secretarial position? (I'm talking about the Jr. Accounting)
What does a female coming out of that program generally get paid at the moment?
Is it too late to sign up for September?
If I do the Jr. Accounting here, how easy/difficult is it to transfer and do the CPA eventually at another school?

It depends on the individual, but the skills are a step up from a bookkeeper.

You should be able to transfer 20 credits to another school.
