| When a 13 yr old boy has a bris, is he awake for it? also, he has a whole audience? or is he allowed a little privacy being that he's older and more developed?

Yeah I also think it seems to have originally been instituted for some medical purpose that is now obsolete, however there is what to be said for the fact that a number of major rishonim consider it an essential part of the mitzva. The rishonim who hold that it's necessary don't say "If you don't do it, the baby might have bleeding problems;" they say "If you don't do it, you haven't fulfilled the mitzvah of milah properly" (for a baby)
I said it before but some people seem to have missed it (either that or they are - quite legitimately - not trusting me on that. DH is a mohel and I wifed through all his training so I probably know more than most ladies about this stuff, but I also wouldn't take a random internet person's word for it...): Metzitza is NOT done on older patients, only on babies. Mohel-DH is not aware of any dissenting opinion on that. It seems to me that if yesterday's mohel wasn't aware of this, I'd seriously wonder how knowledgeable he is about his business in general...
Amother, the general consensus is that the boy/man needs to be awake and not anesthetized during the bris. Many will put on a topical such as lidocaine afterwards to numb the pain, but not before/during. I see absolutely no reason for any audience. Maybe to say amen to the bracha but you don't need a view to do that, it could be done behind a screen, I would like to assume that's how it's done when the nimol is no longer a baby.

| why can't they use a local anesthetic or topical creme before the bris?

Somehow, I really, really doubt that an adult male who just had metzitza b'peh done on him would consider this a blow job. |

| I find it very disturbing. Imagine if someone took a picture on their cell phone and posted it. YUCK.

| I read of a baby who died from this in March I think. He caught Herpes. He was not the first baby who died from this practice.

I read the article. There is a man in my neighborhood who preforms this procedure and he is not certified. His wife told me. It is scary.
I used a surgeon who was certified as a mohel because my sister who is an ob/gyn and does circumcisions herself was appalled at how her second son's bris was done. She and her Dr husband grabbed the baby and brought him to his medical offices and used proper sterilization on him.
The next point is I am sorry for Mrs. K's tragedy; but common sense would dictate not to let a sick sibling suck on her babies pacifier. It is important for mother's to learn how infectious siblings illnesses are for their other children. Simple and I mean simple protections would have prevented this death.
The last point is I don't know who to believe. Neither side has me convinced. I will stick to a surgeon/mochel and common sense hygiene practices. I am not so sure DA had evil intentions. I think she was annoyed because she was put off.

Do you have a 2 yr old?? And a newborn? It can be very difficult to prevent grabbing paci, sucking on it and sticking back into babies mouth.

I have been in that situation. One of my children is special needs so I know that as a mom I have to be hyper-vigilant with him and the one below. Would you as a mother seeing your two year old with open sores on the mouth not scream no when you saw that happening? She claims she saw it. Why didn't she stop it? Now that you are aware it can kill the baby, is the excuse that it is difficult be enough?
Why didn't she make herself more informed as, to how contagious the toddlers herpes was?

Generally he is awake as only local anesthesia is used. A mohel's wife told me that sometimes even local anesthesia would not be used, just cream.
