I think the problem is with needlecrafts in general. I have asked my LOR (Agudah) about quilting -- not for making clothing -- during the nine days and was told no.

I don't have an answer regarding your project but just wanted to say that the issur is actually with sewing, AFAIK. In the halacha book that I have it says not allowed to sew or mend during the 9 days. If it's for a business, there are heterim, from what I understand.
I would try to ask a shailah.

What about a button?
The button on dh shabbos jacket came off and he kinda needs it back on for shabbos....any problems?

We didn't sew new clothing or do needlecraft but we always mended in the 9 day?
I put away all my mending for the 9 days as I hate it, so because I can't sew at least I can mend

I have been told that that is allowed. | I read in "Guidelines" by Rabbis Barclay and Jaeger that simple repairs are permitted when necessary
