| |
My dd is in middle of 8th grade and all the girls her age in the states will be starting 9th grade in September. When we moved here she was in the cut off month and she didn't know the language so they put her in the grade younger. We're thinking of sending her to NY starting 10th grade. When do you think I have to start looking for a school? Do you think it's possible for her to go for half a 9th and then start 10th with the rest? I ask because if she starts in September, she'll be missing a few months here of 9th grade. It's so complicated !! It would be nice if we move by then and nicer if moshiach comes by then .
Now that I got that out of the way, does anyone know of a small high school in brooklyn? We're JPF. She went to Prospect Park up to 2nd grade, but since I won't be there, I'd feel more comfortable with sending her to a smaller school. None of this is for sure, just looking and thinking.
I don't have to worry about boarding because my sister already said that she can stay by her.

It will probably be a decision the school makes- as to what point they think its best for her to join. It will be hard contacting schools now- everyone is on vacation.
What are you looking for besides small and jpf?

I figured it will probably be the schools decision on when she should start, but when is a good time to start looking, now (in september, october) or towards the middle or end of the school year in the states.
I don't know what I'm looking for besides small and just plain frum. Besides that I've been out of the states for quite a few years, I really don't know any of the high schools now because my nieces that are in high school don't live in NY.

"JPF" is pretty broad. What are you looking for in a school? I'm not in NY, but I'm sure others will give suggestions if you give a few more specifics.
College prep or not? College credits? Career training? What type of limudei kodesh? Hebrew language? Extra-curriculars? Any special-ed or enrichment needs?

she should definitely start in september. If she is planning to finish high school in NY then she shouldn't come in half way.
Look now.

Career training is nice, but doesn't necessarily need college prep or credits. She doesn't need any special-ed program or enrichment needs, but I figured if it's small enough, there would be individual attention and that might help if she needs any. I love when schools have extra-curricular activities. The school she went to last year had a lot, but this one doesn't, but I doubt schools in NY have the same types of extra-curricular activities. The schools that I went to had absolutely zero. What do you mean, what type of limudei kodesh, hebrew to hebrew or hebrew to english? Truthfully I don't know her level of the hebrew language. I think it's better than mine, which is not saying much .
Sorry I didn't answer in order of the questions and thank you!

You don't mean this year, do you? I think she's too young to go now.

What do you consider small?
Lev Bais yaakov and Bnos Yaakov Have two classes each.
Bais Yaakov Oz Vhador ( REb. Kalmonowitz) has one class per grade.
Nefesh Academy is advertising that they are open to the American crowd (use to be Russian) but I dont know what crowd the are atracting.
Shulamis High school is small. It is a more Mizrachi school.
In Brooklyn it is also a matter of getting your child accepted. I highly doubt any school would want to take her in midyear.
Mesilas Bais yaakov is also small but more yeshivish.

| For social reasons you would want her to start with the rest of the girls. If she starts in the middle it will be difficult for her to make friends.

| No matter how good the middos are at any school, High School girls are cliquey. Some of the girls will have been in school together since kindergarten. Think about who your daughter knows, does she have cousins in the school, its better if she has a friend to start with.

| BYA also has 2 classes per grade. Where does your sister live? It will be easier to make friends if she lives in their general neighborhood.

My sister sends her girls to BYA and I don't think it's really for us, too yeshivish and from what my sister tells me, extremely cliquey and her dd is only going into 5th grade. She does have a bunch of girls on her block, but they are also very cliquey girls and my dd is not like that at all. Even if we lived in NY, she wouldn't be like that. My sister lives in Flatbush.
