We are going on vacation in August for the first time with a 9 month old baby.

I was told that one of the places we will be "trekking" is not so stroller friendly and I need to get a baby carrier back pack.

I started looking around but they are so expensive...

Does anyone know where I can get a good safe and comfortable one for less than $40?
(is that asking for too much?)

also anyone that has used backpack carriers and has tips and advice... please share.
Thanks!

Less than $40 won't happen unless you get a used framepack on Craig's List or at a consignment store (Kelty is a common brand of those, for example).

Otherwise, most soft structured carriers (Ergo, Beco, Boba, Pikkolo, etc.) are suitable for carrying in a lot of ways, including on the back, as are most mei tais (Babyhawk, Kozy, Catbird Baby, etc.). The main difference is that mei tais tie instead of buckling, and are generally cheaper: they also pack up smaller into, say, a diaper bag. SSCs are somewhat easier to use, and are generally more supportive.

If you're nervous about the expense, see if a friend has one you can borrow just for your vacation. Or you can buy one, but sell it afterward - CL is good for that, or there are other sites to try, including the classifieds right here on imamother - and make back a good chunk of your money. Or you can look on it as an investment, since a good quality carrier is actually really practical in more situations than you might think.

Just how "rugged" is the terrain where you're going? Are you talking about several hours on a mountainside, or just a walk in a park with woodchip paths instead of pavement?

I think the Maclaren baby carriers are under $40. Dont know how sturdy they are or the quality as I have never used one.
