Hello,

My children (ages 4.5 - 8.5) are in the States visiting relatives. Can anyone recommend some good children's films that are playing in theaters?

They have plans for lots of daytrips, but I am looking for some indoor activities during the other days, and I thought going to a movie would be fun (esp during this heat wave).

TIA!

The PG films in the local movie theater now are Brave, Ice Age - Continental Drift and Madagascar 3. There are no G flicks.

I don't recommend them. In Brave the daughter uses witchcraft on her mother. The other two franchises are full of foul jokes.

Wow, that's depressing to hear.

I guess the only clean kids' films are nature shows in museum Imax theaters...

Sad

we took our kids to all 3 and we all enjoyed it. If I have to choose one I would say go see ice age.

I also took my kids to all three and enjoyed. I would not recommend to another because of the potty humor. I don't like characters stuck in tushies. My husband would be appalled if he knew the extent of the jokes. They are PG for a reason.

Kinda taken out of context... that's like saying Finding Nemo is bad because Nemo told his father "I hate you". Sure, we don't want our kids repeating that, but the whole STORY of the film unfolds from that initial conflict, and the final lesson (learned by both parent and child) is one of familial love and reconciliation.

Unless you're one of those "any mention of witchcraft is assur"-types and would forbid Harry Potter and other such stories, I don't think the witchcraft is your problem.

I heard the animation on Brave is breathtaking, but the story is a bit cliched and not Pixar's best work (not comparable to Up, WALL-E, The Incredibles or Toy Story), but still miles above most kiddie movies.

It is not just the witchcraft. It is the general disrespect towards her parents and, at the end the parents bend to her ways. The part where you see means behinds is offensive and there, are a few quite bawdy jokes.

In a "family film", I'm okay with there being a lesson for parents, too: "Sometimes you gotta let your kids grow up and do what's actually best for them, not necessarily what you think is best for them."

I don't think that message tells kids that their parents should ALWAYS do what the kids want.

It's certainly better than most Disney kid sitcoms where the parents are always idiotic buffoons.

The father was the quintessential idiotic buffoon. The mother was only not rigid and unbending when she was very transformed into a bear. The kids throughout were able to fool all the adults.

I took my 3 y.o to see Madagascar and he HATED it- cried to leave the whole way through and he is a huge movie lover.
I do not want to take him to see Brave b/c I dont think he'd understand it- think it is for older children.

I am considering ice age but he hasnt shown any real interest in the commercials so perhaps not.
