I just read about this in reader's digest.Puke (as far as I understood, this is done in order to reduce/disinfect form contamination by salmonella.) The FDA refutes the scare by maintaining that this form of ammonia occurs naturally in nature Shocked yeah, iirc it's in feces, as waste.

does anyone have any more info on this? is it only in particular brands or across the board?

It is actually quite common in a lot of processed foods: It is also quite common to have ammonia in many various aspects of life, outside of bodily functions.

If the levels are extremely high, then it can be an issue, but it didn't seem this way from the article I read on the subject.
