Oh please. Not everyone has enough furniture/room/$$ for a shabbosdik table, chairs, dining room, house, etc.

No. It is NOT ok. Even our forefathers had special shabbos tables.

We have a table for weekdays, one for shabbos/yt and one for pesach.

are you kidding?! just because many of us are lucky enough (spoiled) and live in houses big enough to have a table in the kitchen etc, does not mean that it's not shabosdig. that is bizarre and retarded! that's like the stories of assuming that because grandma cut off the ends of the roast, that there's some halacha or kabbala reason of doing it. ask grandma- she says, the bigger roasts didnt fit in the pan! hallo, within this century, families did not have the room to have more than one table. families in small apartments, or in israel, dont have room for 2 tables. seriously, I would be laughing if this wasnt flippin ridiculous.

you put on a shabbosdig table cloth, and shabbos finery and voila, your table becomes a shabbos table!

The only thing I could think of is if your house has a dining room and also a dining area in the kitchen. You would make Shabbos meals in the dining room.

In my parents' house (in Canada), we had a dining room and it certainly wasn't a posh house or particularly huge, it was actually an older house and I think it used to be the standard that people had dining rooms and then a kitchen table in the kitchen for more casual meals. Nowadays, I think everyone just gets an eat-in kitchen. That's what my parents have now in their new house.

I refer to my dining room table as my shabbos table. We mainly eat there on shabbos and I think my kids got me started referring to is the 'shabbos table'.
But if I have a guests during the week we eat on it during the week.
Or if my kids are doing crafts we do it on there.
And my dh does his paperwork on there.
I think its more of a word usage then a rule.

I am wondering something.

My parents' house have a big enough kitchen for a table. Still I don't remember ever eating there. My parents are very casual but eating in the kitchen was just something very grandmotherly, or unpleasant, in our mind. The noise and heat of the machines and cooking, etc.

Do many people enjoy eating in the kitchen?

I come from a heimish family, and have family who are chasidish, yeshivish and american. I have NEVER heard of such a thing. yes, I do have an eat-in kitchen, but that doesnt mean that the DR table is used only for shabbos. in fact, I know ppl who fold their laundry on their DR table. it may very well be that most families who have DRs and have the space, assume that everyone does that. I would be very interested in seeing this other thread, where spoiled folks assume that this is toras moshe misinai.

I am very big on having special things for Shabbos when possible. Right now I don't have a big enough apartment for more than one table. But I do look forward to hopefully having more than one table at some point in the future, and using the nicer one for Shabbos and YT.

LOL! Laughing NO!!!

It has to do with space...like ewa-jo said, if the house is large there's room for a formal table in the DR and informal in kitchen...NOTHING to do with Shabbos. People who don't keep Shabbos and live in big houses have this too. Let's not make up new Amerikanisher minhagim please!!!!! (Just picture the threads in a generation or so: "do I spend on my kid's tuition or upholding the sacred tradition of a separate shabbos table? help! please advise!")

You mean to say that you don't have a separate home for each occasion?

Shocking. Truly shocking.

That reminds me of the joke about 2 "krumme frumme" yidden boasting to each other:

Yiddele 1: I am so frum I have a separate sukkah for milchigs and fleishigs!

Yiddele 2: So what! I'm so frum I have a separate sukkah for milchigs, fleishigs, AND pesach!

I have a seperate eating area. I fit 6 people comfortably. Its not in the middle of the kitchen, but set aside. Figure its like having a breakfast room.

I am guessing it depends on the kitchen Smile
Growing up, before my parents redid the kitchen in our house, we had an actual breakfast nook. A proper corner with a table near the window. It was lovely (the window looked out to the garage, but still nice Smile )
Even after the kitchen was modernized and there was no eating nook anymore, we always ate in the kitchen during the week and the dinning room on shabbat.
We only have one table right now, so thats where we eat. And it is in our kitchen (but think a very large dinning room table in a large kitchen, so we are not really near the fridge and oven, its just all in teh same room)
