I'm trying to figure out how to make a tzitzis cake for an upsherenish. I know you make a regular cake and cut out some of the middle top. ice it white and put black licorice for the strips. but how do you do the actual strings?
Thanks

I used real strings. Just pressed them into the icing before it hardened.

Here is a link for a picture of a tzitzis cake that someone made. It seemed like they used spaghetti as the strings.

plastic string - the type that you would use to tie a parcel. dig a small hole in each corner. stuff the knots of strings inside.

also, using whipped cream to cover the cake instead of icing will make a really white cake.
if you want choc stripes you can melt choc, put onto parchment paper in a long and narrow shape. cover with more parchment paper and flatten with your hands till thinnish and smooth. freeze till set and very cold. slide a sharp knife down the choc to cut 2 long strips out. trim ends to fit the width of the cake. they come out beautifully straight and on the stark white cake the look is very effective.

If I recall correctly, I used red pull-n-peel licorice, and noone thought it looked weird.
BTW the piece you cut out of the cake for the neck of the tzitzis ca be trimmed & frosted as a yarmulka. I added alef-bais and the boy's name. It was adorable.

whip cream is a good idea. Is it just whip cream or do add something to it?

I would add some powdered sugar -- maybe half a cup to one container whip and a tablespoon of vanilla sugar. That will help stabilize the whip and add to the taste.

I add a little vanilla pudding to keep it stiff.

Vanilla pudding is great and it really stabilizes the whip, BUT the result won't be perfectly white -- the pudding gives it a creamy tint.

confectioner sugar will stiffen the whip and still remain pure white.

There's always white food coloring if you decide to go the frosting route. It makes a HUGE difference.

Oh I didn't realize. I do this as a business (nutty dimensions) and often use powdered sugar to stiffen up whip or creams. make sure to sift through it first or ull end up with little sugar lumps.

americolor gel paste

I think it's called "super white" and its incredible. I add it to all my icing, even if I'm then going to tint it a different color.
