| How about a spatula from MIL? She saw I had broken one and was still using it (because it was a great fit for my hand) but she thought it should be replaced. For my birthday. In red while our kitchen is coded in green for milchig.

It sounds like he took the wrong gift bag. I often use gift bags when Ii need to take a few diapers, some crackers etc with me.....instead of a big diaper bag

| For a wedding present we got a chamber pot. Ok it wasn't actually a chamber pot it just looked exactly like one and said cholent on it . Weird thing was it was not oven safe so you couldn't cook the cholent in it and who serves cholent in a chamber pot?!

I guess that is a nice way to put it. But it was from a lady, whose youngest is over 5 years old. She handed it to him and said congrats. the pacifiers went straight into the garbage.

Someone gave me a curvy glass "thing" that looked like a short, fat vase within a vase with a narrow space between the two vases. I thought maybe you were supposed to put different colors of water in each space so that you'd see a different color depending on the angle of sight, or maybe one kind of flower in the inner vase and another color in the outside section, but the "thing" was too short and wide to work as a flower vase of any type. It was the wrong shape for a flowerpot, having a "waist" in the middle, and anyway who uses clear glass flowerpots? It had no lid, so it wasn't a terrarium, and the proportions were wrong for a serving piece for veggie-sticks-and-dip. I was stumped.
A couple of years later I saw a picture online of a fancy table setting, and darned if the picture didn't show my mystery glassware to be a holder for a pillar candle. It's short and very wide so it's virtually impossible to knock over. You put the candle in the inner portion, and the space between the two walls serves as insulation so that you don't burn yourself if you accidentally touch it. It's clear glass so you benefit from all the illumination all around. Brilliant, pun unintended, but why didn't the manufacturer include a picture that showed it in use?

I think I also posted this already in this thread or another because it really was the strangest gift. It sounds similar to yours but with 4 compartments.
We used as a game. Like can you guess what this wedding present is?
After a few years I got tired of storing it and threw it out. But based on some e-bay postings maybe I should have tried to sell it instead.

I've just learned its a Vintage France French Glass 4 Compartment Liquor Wine Decanter according to the ebay posting in case anybody cares. I'm not sure how you pour with out emptying the other compartments, but what do I know. But it could just be the seller made that up.

| a nonfrum relative presented us for our wedding with a large piece of pottery adorned with reliefs of the moon and sun. It was handmade by Native Americans, who actually believe in many powers in nature. I told DH this is the only gift we got that we might actually have a Torah obligation to smash to pieces!

Soon as I read "decanter" that's what I thought--how can you pour one liquid and not the rest? They left out the stoppers! I think that description is a total crock. Nobody would make a liquor decanter without a stopper, because then the liquor would evaporate.
I think it's a vase for...umm...flowers, and the individual holes are to keep the flowers upright. Don't you hate it when your long-stemmed flowers flop all over the place because the vase has too wide a mouth?

My very wealthy "uncle in-law" gave us an antique silver bowl that he bought at an auction. He said he had consulted his rav as to how to kasher it, since non-jews had used it. However... it was embossed with their initial, "S", which is NOT our last name's initial. I think this is so tacky!
My DH and I joked about giving it to his daughter as a wedding present, as she married a boy whose last name stared with "S".

antique silver pieces are "in" in certain crowds. Its possible he paid a lot of money for it.

Right! In fact, wealthy, established families often have all kinds of things with initials or monograms other than their own. It's a sign that you inherited, rather than purchased, your things.
I have an acquaintance who collects silver, and she often gets great bargains with initials. Among her friends who are knowledgeable about her collection, she refers to these pieces as her "inheritance from Great-Aunt Ebay" or something similar. But if she's entertaining someone who wouldn't understand, she'll explain a "B" on the flatware by saying something like, "Oh, yes. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Bennett."
So I don't think this is tacky at all. Your uncle probably thought he was giving you something unique and valuable, but that he was sharing an interest in antique items of this nature, as well.

| I agree with Fox. Antique silver is so much more beautiful and well-made than the new stuff out today. I would gladly accept a silver item with any monogram.

I was in 2nd Grade, and I got a.....thingy. Don't know what to call it. It was a huge monkey totem pole looking thing carved out of coconut shell with dry grass as hair (which was glued on with mud) It was from my teacher and I was so scared of the way it looked that I threw it out. lol! _________________

| I received lingerie from six different ladies after I gave birth for the first time. I was in my 40s. I can't imagine why so many people did this.
