Ronen will be decidedly weird in English speaking circles, and among the Jews, may confine him to the moderns at least potentially.
Maybe you should give the kid more leeway to define himself. Giving him an old fashioned, been done a milliion times name from Torah, like Shmuel or Joshua, would give him more leeway.
Ronen will tell certain people his background before he ever opens his mouth, which may not always be pleasant for him, and, it is truly strange to a non-Jewish ear, and he will have to move among non-Jews sometimes. He will certainly spend a lifetime explaining how it's spelled. That can be tiresome. Every heartbeat spent that way could be spent on something else.
But I am no expert. Just my two cents, since you asked. I ask pardon if this offends. |
We don't know where op lives, but in many circles/countries Shmuel is just as defining/narrow as Ronen. As is Joshua, in a different way. That's life, almost every name defines you. None of these are really strange names, like 'Sna-ee' (Squirrel) - they are all normal, acceptable names in different circles. The circles where Ronen would be normal, Shmuel would be considered more of a name for a saba.
I like the name, although as others have said, it's not a new, modern name. I think of it as more of an Israeli classic. It's one of those names that doesn't really go out of style.

The only Ronens I know are either secular or BT's. | Chossidmom, I just realized that the Ronen that you found from Kol Chai has to be a frum Jew, no? I mean, he does the chassidish/Jewish music show every morning from 8 or 9 - 10. I love it. But I doubt he is secular, not if you heard the music played

Dolly welsh, every name under the sun is defining, even an old fashion name.
My brother's name is hanania. He now lives in Israel, but for the first 18 years of his life he was in america. There were never any problems with people saying his name nor with defining who he was.
And who really cares if someone's name can tell a person's background before they open their mouths. My name is also a unique name and I have people always say things about it. Who cares? Thats what makes unique names so beautiful.

I made this association as well.
Not my style, but hey, why should you care what I think? You might dislike my own kids' names, and that's okay.
If you like it, go for it.

I agree. Ronen is definitely dated. In my mind too it is more of a secular name though for no specific reason (as opposed to Nimrod and Omri for example) that I can think of.
How about Hallel, which also has the "joyful song" aspect to it as well as being more modern andhas more religious overtones?

| I really love the name. We are thinking of changing our son's name. I will discuss this name.
