It's spelled Shane. Wiki says it's an Anglicized version of the Irish name Sean, which is itself a version of John.

Are you saying you heard the name Shane and were wondering if it counts as Jewish? B/c I really don't think it does... I don't think there's a legit male equivalent of Shaina, unless you count something like Yafet.

I like it. It's really a secular name. Israelis would say shen for tooth, so Shain would be different, with two yuds.

There can't be an Israeli Shane. The sound "ay" with that "y" doesn't really exist. If I saw Shin Yud Yud Nun-sofit I'd read it: Shine. Not Shane. Anyway, it's not a very masucline name for a man.

I know someone who called their son sean after her father who was yaakov. (Yaakov=Jacob=jack=John=Sean)

So yaakov would be the hebrew.

According to Beider, the closest you're going to get is Sheynman: Created by Jews from the (Judeo-) German expression meaning handsome man (schoeneman).

this is totally irrelevant, but Seamus would actually be a more accurate translation of Yaakov! Sean would be more from Yochanan.

I'm not sure a boy would like the name Shain, meaning nice/pretty. It's a little fay.

Not so sure you are correct. But I think it is a rather vague connection anyway. Perhaps they didn't like the name Seamus. (they live in Israel, can you imagine a Seamus there? Laughing Seamus sounds like a character from a bad joke)

spring13 is correct. Seamus is the Scottish form of James which stems from Yaakov.
Sean is a form of John and comes from Yochanan.

Hey, I kind if like Seamus! *snort*
I can't really imagine a Sean in Israel either - although I do know an Israeli Juliette...

Sean/Shawn and Shane are 2 different pronunciations. But I read it has some reference to "Chein" as in favour in God's eyes. I like it and find it unique.

I don't think that even counts as "naming after". Unless you consider thinking of a person while giving them a completely different name, "naming after".
