trying again...
I'd like to serve stew for shabbos lunch. I don't want to serve chulent.
I often make vegetarian dishes that are soupy or plain stews. How do I go about crock-potting my dishes? Or does anyone have any recipes that are tried and true for lasting until shabbat lunch?
Or any other ideas of how I can have something like dahl (Indian lentil stew) or an eggplant-tomato stew for lunch?
Or should I just give up???

First of all in my house my DH does all the cooking. That being said, he makes all sorts of stews instead of chulent. I cannot give recipes since I dont cook - but here are some ideas for you to look up -
1. Beef and Barely Stew (just beef and barley no potatoes or beans)
2. Feojada (Brazilian black bean stew with various meats)
3. Lamb stew (lamb and barley)
4. Persian Chicken and Rice Chamim (this is Chicken and rice cooked overnight)
5. Hungarian Goulash (this is a meat and mushroom stew in a tomato based sauce)
6. Turkey in chocolate Mole sauce (this is a mexican stew with a tomato based sauce that has a little bittersweet chocolate or cocao powder to enrich and bring out the flavor of the sauce, we usually use turckey but you can use chicken or meat).

| I usually make my mil`s recipe as I too, don`t like cholent: I put cut up cholent meat in a cooking bag with a bit of onion powder, another bag with rice, double amount of water to rice and onion soup mix, tie each bag and put in a crock pot half filled with water. Maybe not a stew exactly, but a good alternative to cholent. For veggies I just make a salad or cut up peppers with a bit of salt and olive oil in the oven (though it would be cold by shabbos day) as a side.

I have a really easy recipe although I do use a more expensive cut of meat so it will be a more pricey dish.
Put a nice size brisket into the crock pot. Cut five medium to big onions in slices. Cover the meat with that. Pour a large bottle of dark beer over this. Then shake a nice amount of onion soup mix over this. Then let cook on high until bubbling. Turn to low until ready to serve.
I serve this over white rice. It's really delicious.

I put chickpeas and potatoes on the bottom of the crockpot and then put a bag in with barley, a bag in with rice and 2 individual meat loaves wrapped in foil - then add eggs and spices to the pot and fill to the top with water - a whole meal in a pot!
I make chicken in the crockpot as well for Shabbos lunch - put a chicken cut into 1/8ths in with diced tomatoes, olives, onion and lemon with spices.

Are you able to slice it or is it just served in shreds? _________________ Want to lose weight fast? Want to keep it off easily?

Sorry, I meant a parve veggie dish... though some of these sound like really good ideas for my family.
Do I just start making a stew on the stove top, then transfer it all to the crock pot with extra liquid? Or should I keep it in a plastic bag? Anyone know how to figure it out?

When my parents make stew, they leave it on the blech in a pot... _________________ http://a-natural-birth.com
