Does anyone know what the origin or meaning or Hebrew equivalent of this name is? A bit of disagreement in the family regarding whether it would be Shlomo or Shmuel or something else entirely.

Shlomo is usually paired with Zalman. I don't know what Zanvil I'd for, but it isn't shlomo afaik.

It has been used as equivalent for both. It is Yiddish. Ask someone who has the Beider, maybe make a "help do you have a Beider" thread Laughing

It's child abuse. That's what it is.

Its paired with Shmuel. I think its more of a nickname for Shmuel than an actual given name.

According to Beider, it's Shmuel.

Yay - we were right!
What is Beider?
Proof of it being a Shmuel equivalent would be great.

Interesting, because I know someone by the name of Shmuel Zanvel, as an official name given by the bris.

This is Beider: http://www.amazon.com/Dictiona.....iven+Names

The book doesn't give an indication of HOW it morphed from Shmuel to Zanvel, all it says is that it demonstrates that at least the German form was borrowed by Jews in German-speaking countries.

My own personal idea.

Shmuel -> Samuel -> pronounced in German it sounds Zamuel -> shortened easily to Zanvl.

Pretty much.

BTW, Shmuel Zanvel is like Dov Bear, Tzvi Hirsch, Zev Wolf... Hebrew with the Yiddish.
