Looks like we'll be making a bris on a foster baby. B"H

It's been a couple years and now we live in a new community. So I don't even know who does brissim here! I don't know anyone, really. OMGosh.

Any tips, reminders, etc?!!

I'm very excited but nervous, too.

What do I need to know and plan, both for baby and the simcha, and what basics do I need??

I don't even know what to ask.

I guess I should try to get a minyan, maybe from my son's yeshiva.

It may be that we do it on erev shabbas as well, if we can get the issur to do it on time.

It looks like there will be trouble getting the issur. They can't find the mother.

Does anyone know until what age a mohel can still do a bris, before it has to be done by a doctor instead??

I don't fully understand the prob, but a mohel can do a bris on a grown adult (my dh was actually at one on an adult in Russia) he should also tell you (or you can ask) what to expect/the order of events & what you need to bring. What area do you live in?

Thanks HLM, I think what I'm asking is just, what should I be doing to prepare for this.

I need a mohel. I think I've got one. I didn't ask him, but any guesses to how much is this going to cost?

He'll probably tell me how to prepare the baby.

I need a place. Tentatively got a place.

I'll need a minyan. I'll ask my son to bring a bunch of bochurs.

I guess I just need to be ready to make a seuda.

Get a recommendation for a mohel (www.itim.org has a list of all misrad habriut certified mohalim, you can search by area, and by mumchiyut if you want). Call him and ask all your questions. I have yet to meet a mohel who wouldn't provide answers.

I think mohelim don't charge a set amt. When we asked around we were told that the average was around $100, but that can differ according to area. You only need 10 men for the seuda & really can be the simple. many ppl do deli, rolls, salads....

Big Mazal Tov!!!

I don't know how things work here in Israel -- B"H I've made a few Brissim, but all before our Aliyah. But some basics I assume are the same. The Mohel usually gives you a list of things he wants you to have prepared (mine listed everything from extra diapers to the exact type of guaze pads he liked to put over the site afterwards!). You should feel free to ask the mohel for any information you want -- he's done this before! I believe there is an inyun to have a minyan at the Bris, and it's a seudas mitzvah, so there should be washing and bentching (with special additions to the bentching, BTW).

Some things that may not be on the list:
1) If the bris is not at your home, have a carriage or something that allows the baby to lie flat afterwards. A semi-reclining position puts more pressure on the area and can cause pain.
2) If you are using a fancy "bris outfit", then maybe bring something more comfortable to change him into if he'll be hanging around for the seudah.
3) I always gave my husband a small bottle to bring to the front and give him immediately after the actual procedure, even while they were finishing the krias sheim and the brachos. The sucking helps to calm him and relieve pain (I was nursing but I would pump a few ounces just for that time).

Hatzlacha!

The deli is a great idea...I think I did it that way before. Thanks for the reminder.

LOL! But after 30 babies, I've somehow gained weight. Maybe all that cuddling slowed my metabalism. Smile

Thanks for your responses.

Looks like the bris is going to be put off for a while, unfortunately.

They can't find the mother. Ugh.

But this will give us some time to get to know him before he's in pain for three days from the bris.

I'm so excited. He'll be here in a few hours.

Mazal tov!

I don't know where you live but if you need things like a pillow, seat for Eliyahu, outfit, cloth diapers there may be a gemach in your area for these things.

Ok I apologize. I guess it's another cultural block. I have been proudly shown pics of foster kids even of acquaintances :shrug

My foster kids are in a special situation, kind of top secret, emergency care. So sorry, no pics.

What a hard night, though. I've got to get him an anti-collic bottle, asap.
