| |
We have only half an hour or 45 min. to warm up the food for the night meals. I'm worried that won't be enough time to warm up soup. So I thought I'd make some cold appetizer. Does anyone have ideas? Preferably milchig. No fish DH doesn't like fish.
Or do you think 2 portions of soup will get hot in half an hour? (The kids will be in bed by the time we eat)

soup heats up really quickly if the flame is very hot (5/10 minutes). But if you are eating late you might want to only serve one course. Also, you can heat up a big pot of soup earlier for the kids and leave it on for you and dh on the second night.
or make dips, greek salad, garlic rolls. You can serve blintzes as a an appetiser as well. you can make more savoury ones rather then the sweet type. Those heat up pretty quickly.

She is asking for the first night. She won't be able to heat up soup on shabbos.
I am making a meat soup in the crockpot before shabbos and leaving it on from before shabbos till motzai shabbos- that's what we'll eat the first night (only night for us).

| why isn't hot soup for the second night a problem? (I hope I don't sound stupid - it's just that I can't figure out how I'm going to heat up the soup for the 2nd night either....)

Shavuot starts on Motzei Shabbat. Now first of all, you can't heat up liquids on Shabbat but you can on Yom Tov, but more importantly, you can't start preparing for Yom Tov until Shabbat is out (after you lit candles)... which means you have at most an hour to heat the food up before the men come home from shul.

For the second night you can warm it up before when it's still first day yom tov. If you will use it (e.g. for the children or even just for youself as a snack). The problem with first night is jsut that on shabbos you can't warm up soup.

I'm making one form the BY cookbook. It has a coconut-nut crunch on top. Do you want it?

I thought you can't prepare from one day of yom tov to the next. So why would you be allowed to heat up soup on day one for night two? (The only thing I can think of doing is take advantage of my Jerusalem location, and ask one of my 1-day neighbors to heat up the soup for me.) Or is there still something I'm missing.
I have a plata I use for shabbos, and because of the way my apartment is set up (think on the small side) if I have out the plate, I have to either sacrifice my counter or my stove. So I sacrifice my stove. But that means that it takes pretty much FOREVER for food to heat up. Unless I buy a crockpot for Shavuos, so that I can just leave on a flame... whatever. That's something to think about.

I would just leave the coconut out of the crunch. I actually just noticed it's optional.
Walnut crunch:
2 1/2 cups rice crispies
1 cup ground walnuts
1 cup ground coconut (optional)
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup margarine, softened
Preheat oven to 350. Mix all ingredients well. Spread onto a cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes. When cooled break into chunks. Store in an airtight container or ziploc bag.
Chilled strawberry soup:
2 bags frozen strawberries
2 Tbs instant vanilla pudding mix
1 Tbs cornstarch in 2 Tbs water
Place strawberries and pudding in a pot with just enough water to cover. R=Bring to a boil then lower flame. Let simmer till strawberries are soft, approx 20 min. Whisk cornstarch in water and add to pot. Mix. Turn off flame and blend with an immersion blender.
Serve cold with crunch ontop.
Serves approx 6.

I purchased an electric plug in single burner for yom tov -
for 2 reasons - 1. I do not lik eto have a flame on the whole yom tov (all my food is prepped and cooked b4 yom tov and warmed on a hot plate.
2. we love to eat soup and it will not heat up in time for the meal -
so I plug the electric burner into a timer and have it go on around candle lighting time -
this way - after I light I can start to heat up the soup. just make sure u have a pot on the burner when u raise and lower the heat.
