I thought it was forsure asur but someone told me it might not be

during the week I put a intercom in my sons room as he has asthma and I want to hear if he's coughing.

can you do this on shabbos?

Ask a rav. A lot of things which are otherwise ussor are okay in medical situations, which this is, so whether others were allowed it for their baby isn't relevant here. Smile

I turn on machines (with a shinui) and use electronic monitoring for my son when I need to.

it could also be there are different machines. Some react to the sound and then send the message some will just transmit the entire time. So it may depend on the model.

I agree for medical reasons you may get a heter as well.

My SIL used a monitor on Shabbos for many years for her asthmatic son.
I have a hearing loss and was told that I could use a monitor in my baby's room so that I'll hear her when she cries.
But for sure you have to ask a rav, because each situation is different and also some are more problematic than others.

I was also told it depends on how much you need it. So we usually don't, but there have been situations where we have, based on what our Rav said.

Definitely not an open-and-shut case. AYLOR.
