The ending was great (not too happily-ever-after, but we saw how the characters grew and changed), and the epilogue was brilliant.

I loved it also. I think a lot of us wanted to see that great crop come in and they live happily ever after, but on the other hand after reading about it for so many weeks it also just seemed too hunky-dory... The way it ended was not cheesy at all and very satisfying.
SPOILER ALERT:
I do think the water didn't need to get THAT high before they got out, though, how traumatic!!!
Sigh. Besides for the summer taking a drop too long, and a little more melodrama than suits my taste, that was overall probably THE best, most satisfying serial novel I ever read.

Yep... while I agree with many of you that the serial ended up being really shleppy halfway through, the epilogue was FANTASTIC!!!

for you and for many others, but many others read her stories and serials for the rich language, not only for hte plot
so I for one am upset it ended( according to what I read on this thread, I havent read the last installment yet)

| Oh, I'm all for language and such, but the language has to SAY things or what is it anyway? For a few weeks there were only very very minor little bits of conversation and happenings. I could handle a chapter of deep conversation or character development in lieu of actual events, but I felt that we didn't even get much of that.

I also really enjoyed the ending.
Just that Liza's comments to Pace at the end of Scotty's story in the PEsach supplement came to mind - I wanted the juicy details about how Rosie and Yidel got married, where they lived, (did they move into Widow Polin's house or did they get their own homestead) who looked after the Rvorskys when Rosie left home (and what she made for dinner  )
Oh well. I guess this is considered better writing... The things we have to sacrifce for better writing *sigh*

| I never usually buy the books that come out after they're written in the magazines since I feel like I just read them anyways, but this is one book I cant wait to read!!

I agree. Though I loved it, I feel we missed out by not having a WRITTEN epilogue!
Oh well, perhaps it'll appear in another story or supplement.

Sheesh. This thread makes surfacing after Full-Harvest-itis more than worth it...
Thank you everyone for sharing such wonderful compliments!! Talk about swollen headedness. *grins*
Now the fun part starts - getting it all ready for the book. There'll be loads of extras - the *original* ending (aka more romantic one) for Roger Rvorsky's story, plus a Rosie-Yidel story, interviews with descendants of the real settlers of the period, and pictures.... this book's gonna be heavy enough to kill spiders with. (Just don't, please. I like spiders.)

It is because you add material for the books that I buy your serials in book form even though I've read them in the magazine. Most serials that are printed as books I don't buy because I read the whole thing already.
In fact, I just reread the book Shortchanged and really enjoyed it again.
