I've been on SCD since January. I get some inconsistently good results once in a while, but started going downhill after pesach. My daily diet (lately) consists of cashew cake & tea for breakfast, chicken and carrots/squash for lunch and dinner and in between I snack on applesauce/pear sauce. I'm still running to the bathroom, losing weight, and feeling generally lousy. any ideas?

Hug
Did you start the diet with stage 1 and then gradually progress stages as directed?

DEF. agree re. going by the stages.

Also, is your cashew cake made w. cashew flour or cashew butter? The flour can be pretty hard to digest.

Do you eat the homemade yogurt? I think it's really crucial to the healing....

Lastly, this just may not be the right way for you to get healthy. Not even Remicade works for everyone.

I agree with 4sisters -- SCD does NOT work for everyone. I've read that at least 20% of people with IBD don't have success with SCD (if not more). Specifically for IBD, cashew flour could definitely be really hard to digest for someone who is not doing well.

I think it's important to vary your foods, eating the same thing day after day can be hard on your system. Also any chance you ate a kazayis of matzo by the seder? That little bit of matza can sometimes mess me up for weeks and weeks. I would get off the any nut product immediately and go back to stage 1.

I would def go back to intro and then proceed very slowly.

you may be eating something that doesn't agree with you. ppl have sensitivities within the diet. also, if you ate matza over pesach, you're probably back to square one. I have messed myself up like that. and after messing up my progress I had new sensitivities. definitely go back to stage one for a few days at least. and eat LOTS of yogurt. also, I suggest you take a lot of omega 3, it really helps.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I had gone to mrs. weiss in monsey a couple months ago, and she took me off nut flour and dairy (miss the yogurts BADLY), and more recently, plain eggs--baked in a cake is apparently fine , and I did better for a couple of weeks and then flared again. btw, the cashew cake is made with cashew butter so there's no grit. I then went to a kinesiologist in the city and that helped a bit too, but since pesach I'm just not well. I developed back and hip pain now. I can't believe that a kzayis of matzah could mess me up like this! The thought of doing introductory again is scaring me, because this time I'm left with just fish and chicken, carrots and squash. I'm supposed to think positively, but there isnt a breakfasty type of protein to hold me off till lunch time, and I am downright starving everyday as it is. maybe I'm forgetting about something?

Do you have Crohns or UC (or other)?

Hugs, Sensibility!

Hug Hug Hug Hug Hug

I did SCD for 5 months a few years ago, so I can only imagine what you're going through. Refuah Shlaimah!

A friend's DH was on it for 2 years and had a flair up and needed to be hospitalized with meds. He's now back on SCD, and thinks he'll be on it for life. My understanding is that SCD can help a LOT, but there also is a place for meds when it's not helping.

I'm so sorry for all your pain!
Intro is REALLY hard, but I believe that if it helped once, it can help again.
And yes, a little matza (especially for a new SCDer) really can mess everything up.
I know the diet isn't for everyone. I have a relative who it just does not work for.
But you have seen progress, and I hope you can pull through to see some more Hug
(I'm a firm believer in diet + meds, and then only reducing the meds slowly when/if body can handle it.)

Hatzlacha. The SCD success rate for Crohn's is better than for UC. One more reason to give it the old yeshiva try Wink

hatlacha rabba with the SCD!!
I also tried it (for UC) - so I can understand how difficult it is for you. Unfortunately it did not work for me, but the success rate is much higher with Crohn's patients.

At least you'll know you tried everything possible.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking but I didn't want to discourage OP; hoperfully she would - and did - say Crohn's, so we could encourage. Yours means a lot, IMO!

And BTW, welcome Sensibility!

FTR I'm on SCD for coliitis about 3.5 yrs and I'm doing great. If I would've heard that it works more for Crohns before I started, I doubt I would/ve put my hopes up. So if you ever come across anyone with UC and wants to try the SCD, please don't give them these statistics.....
