just curious; does this new generation write thank you notes for gifts? When I was growing up we wrote them for everything from birthday gifts, shower gifts, wedding gifts, baby gifts? it seems when I give a gift I hardly ever receive a note?

That doesn't make it correct.

Thank you notes have not gone out of style.

This is how the giver knows the gift was received, especially if it was sent by mail or dropped-off at a party.

In general, notes are still written by hand and sent by mail. I'm waiting for this to change, but we're in the bar/bat mitzvah years and all the notes have been handwritten and mailed - maybe reflecting the parents' upbringing.

If a gift is given in person and the recipient knows what it is and thanks the giver right away, a thank you note is not strictly necessary. This may be why you do not receive as many thank you notes as you expect.

Where I am, people would be horrified, upset and offended if they never got a thank you note. I will probably make a personal thank you call for birthday cards and presents, but for weddings, bar mitzvahs, baby presents etc they will all be sent out by post or delivered by hand if very local. I think it is probably ok to send an email copy of a thank you to overseas, but it depends how close you are to that person.
