I don't want to state the obvious, but on Chol Hamoed Succos outings, having cookies that are Shehakol would really be neat!

It should be stored in the freezer, someone I know kept it a whole year and said the taste was even better and used it for cake that tasted amazing.

bumping this up! LOL!
I made the mistake of buying a potato starch when I had most of one left from last year...so now I have 1 1/4 left...I'll put away the full one, but want to use up the one w/ small amount left.

I was thinking of eventually making a pesach cake or two with them. lol. I generally do those in the wonderbaker and when they don't flop, they're so fluffy! wonder if the oven they would come out the same Smile

Me too, I bought too much potato starch! There was a sale and it was so cheap so I bought 4 containers. (I had no idea how much I'd need.) And now I'm left with 2 and 3/4s. Oh well...

Interesting. I never froze it, just saved from year to year in a tightly closed can. The one it came in. I think it lasts for years. Same with cocoa. Matzoh Meal I buy fresh and use it up. I would not save matza meal, but closed packs of ground nuts I do store in the fridge for the next year.
Thanks for the tips FS, I was so itchy all Pesach, and it never occurred to me to use potato starch!

I often wonder why it is so cheap, when it takes so many potatoes to make a bit of starch.
But I hardly use it, making most of my cakes without it, and just using plain eggs to make egg noodles and crepes. If a recipe does call for potato starch, I can usually skip it or exchange it for ground nuts.
Most I ever use is a few tablespoons for an entire yom tov.

I buy bags and bags of it all year round. I use it to dry chicken cutlets, instead of flour, when making shnitzel.

Its so funny, this year in Montreal all the stores ran out!
(you know how they run out of something each year...)
So my friend's dad who has a store with ready made food was desperate during chol hamoed so he traded one of his customers a vegetable stir fry for a can of potato starch that she had at home.

I also had too much, but I had saved one from last year which was sealed and it was fine this year. I'm also going to try to and use up a container that was opened though. Maybe I'll try the sweet and sour chicken!

I was going to start a new thread, but I figure what's the difference if the Pesach in question is in 2011 or 2013. This thread really wasn't so clear. What is the general consensus? Can I use an open can of potato starch that was in a cabinet, not freezer? What about a closed can? And what about a sealed bag of ground nuts not in the freezer? The open potato starch smells fine. DH is going shopping for our first pesach groceries tonight so we can begin motsei shabbos.

Yes, you can use the potato starch - open or closed. Usually the nuts will be fine also, unless they smell off ( which would rare).

Actually nuts depend on how or where they were stored. If they are in a warmer environment they may go rancid or just a little bitter. Taste before so that you do not have a bitter cake.
