Arcy, I feel your pain, but you are totally mistaken on this one.

This is not a Jewish or chesed issue.

My non-Jewish friends have just paid over $15000 for their deceased mother's funeral. She were cremated, so that they did not incur costs of burial and perpetual care.

If you do not like the system, try statrting your own undertaking business, you will find out that burials in NYS are controlled by the Mafia, which has a monopoly on the unions involved. They payouts to the organization are enormous, and if you don't pay out, you will find that your building has a fire. (sound familar to Boro Parkers).

they might have had bad experience with others, there are more expenses that we think of, and they do more work (many times ) than we think of. as other posters said, and as I know from an aquaintence who bH did have a good experience, but let me in on some of the background information

maybe you guys are right. I may have over reacted. maybe the costs are reasonable, but the way they handled was not like I expected from frum Jews.

I am from out of town, I'm not used to the hostility form NYers. (this is just generlizing, I know some NYers are nice)

500$$ sounds reasonable especially if the rav makes exceptions and works w/ the family.

thank you all for helping me think reasonably.... it's just hard to see frum ppl act so disgusting.

update: DH just spoke to some1 he knows who is involved w/ the CK and the guy is shocked that the person who was dealing w/ the family acted like that.

He said that if we ever hear of ANY1 refusing to release the body - totally keneged halacha btw - because of $$ we should let him know and he will personally go to the guy doing it and give him a misheberach. ....

basicly it was not supposed to be done, and the guy who my dh spoke to, said that the guy who did it should for sure ask for mechila, both a the kever and from those sitting....

ya I doesnt sound like a normal occurrence , unfortunately you had a really bad experience. my fil is a member of the chevra and he is the most sensitive guy out there. and I know thats not whats supposed to be done in such a situation. im sorry for your pain and loss.
ps my fil does it totally on s volunteer basis. never got a dime for his "services"

The only explanation I can think of is that this man was also out of sorts and mourning the loss of your family member as well, and couldn't muster up the wherewithal to be sensitive. Or, he is an abrasive person who should not be in this business.

Either way, surround yourself now with loving people who will not make this difficult time any worse for you than it has to be.
