Yizkor is the last day, so if that's what you mean, then that's your answer. However if you're using it as a flame to be "ma'avir eish" on YT, you light a 48 hour one erev chag (both times) and then you can light the other one on the last night.

I was told for a two day Yom Tov, when Yizkor is said on the 2nd day, to light a 48 hour candle before Yom To starts. I was told that it is better not to light a candle for yizkor from an existing flame on the yom tov itself. So, for Pesach and Shavuos, when Yizkor is the 2nd day of Yom Tov, I light a 48 hour. For Yom Kippur and Shemini Atzeret, I just light a regular one. All are lit before candlelighting.

Do you want to share the basis/reasoning for this?

(As an aside for OP, this year you MUST light your yizkor candle before candlelighting because the 8th day, assuming you're in chu"l, is Shabbat. Most years, unless you get a psak like the above poster, it doesn't matter before or after...one is permitted to light from an existing flame on YT.)

Not tzviakayla, but it makes sense. You are allowed to light from an existing flame for cooking or light on YT. Not for any reason you feel like. So probably a yartzheit light isn't considered a YT need.

Shalhevet, that is exactly what I was told. It's not a need for Yom Tov, so a 48 hour candle should be lit prior to Yom Tov.

In my books, having a smoke isn't a YT need either...but I don't have enough fingers on enough hands to count the number of [men] I've seen hanging around the shul's yahrzeit candle to grab "a light".

Those that have mentioned that they hold it is better not to light a yahrtzeit candle (from existing flame) on Yom Tov -- can you provide a source for it?

This is a matter of discussion between members of my household, and I am hoping for some sources to clarify it.

TIA

I have been told that there is a Rav who paskens that you should not light Yom Tov candles at all on second night as we don't need them for light and as such they are not a 'Tzorech Yom Tov' in terms of being allowed to transfer fire. I imagine the Yizkor candle question falls under the same idea. If you want the name of the rav you can pm me. BTW we light Yom Tov & Yizkor candles on the second night.

I am aware of that reasoning, I am looking for it's source. One side here says that lighting more candles should be done to enhance YT with more light and the other side says that.

Are you saying that some people hold not to bentch licht for the 2nd night of YT? That I've never heard of. No, I'm not interested in the name of a Rav; I would like to textual sources to refer people to.

Thanks.
