Dear Family, Friends and Business Acquaintances,
Yanky Ostreicher has been unjustly incarcerated for 10 months in Palmasola Prison (Santa Cruz, Bolivia), one of the most notorious prisons in the world. Our elected officials, while being aware of the situation, have not been doing much other than receiving updates from the family.The situation has gotten progressively worse and we are now in dire need of government intervention.
We are asking you to please take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to call the offices of the officials listed below and respectfully ask them to please step up their efforts in obtaining Yanky's release.

what is he accused of? has their been a trial? what is the sentence? is he guilty?

The US can go into other countries and arrest other countries citizens for internet crime, but they cannot extract a man from this sort of mess?

| I wonder why this case gets so little publicity. Probably because he's innocent. Poor poor family!

No, they cannot force another country release someone from prison. Any more than Israel could force Japan to turn over the 3 young men arrested there.
I'm not sure what you're referring to re arrests in foreign countries for internet crime. Remember, the US couldn't even arrest Roman Polanski. If a foreign country agrees to cooperate with the US, they do. Bolivia isn't cooperating.
Which isn't to say that putting pressure on the US to pressure Bolivia is a bad idea. It can't hurt.

I think the US are using news laws meant to used against terrorists to do this.
Didn't one of the bochurim end up going to prison in Israel?
(and I am sure japanese prisons are health spas compared to a south american one)

There's a treaty.
Pursuant to the treaty, they asked another country to arrest someone who is alleged to have committed a crime in the US.
The country complied.
Now the country is being asked to extradite. Its not automatic. Note the part about one guy fighting extradition for 10 years.
This is very different from telling another country "you have someone in your country whom you think committed a crime in your country, but we demand that you release him." Not gonna happen. Didn't happen in Japan. (Where Israel negotiated for allowing them to serve their sentences in Israel. Japan is a lot more civilized than Bolivia, though. I fear that won't happen.)
I feel very bad about this guy, and do hope the US exerts as much influence as possible. But short of an Entebbe style raid, all the US can do is pressure.

| The reason it's getting so little publicity is because Jacob was told that if the media gets involved his chances of being released decrease drastically.

a big problem is that the US has a horrible relationship politically with Bolivia.
I thought he was released on bail. Was that revoked?
