Israel has demanded that Baroness Ashton resign after the European Union foreign minister made an "outrageous comparison" of the Toulouse shooting to "what is happening in Gaza"
Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's foreign minister, has called on Lady Ashton to withdraw comments that placed Monday's murder of Jewish children in France alongside recent deaths of young civilian Palestinians in Israeli military operations.
"The declarations were not appropriate and he expressed the hope that she would re-examine and reverse them," his spokesman said.
Eli Yishai, Israel's interior minister, called on Lady Ashton to resign because her statement "further harms the ability of the EU to be an honest broker" in the Middle East.
"She can no longer serve in her position," he said.
In a speech to young Palestinian refugee activists on Monday, Lady Ashton was reported to made comments that deeply angered Israel, putting Gaza on a list of tragedies and atrocities where children have been killed.
"We remember young people who have been killed in all sorts of terrible circumstances - the Belgian children having lost their lives in a terrible tragedy and when we think of what happened in Toulouse today, when we remember what happened in Norway a year ago, when we know what is happening in Syria, when we see what is happening in Gaza and in different parts of the world - we remember young people and children who lose their lives," she said.
Over 20 hours after the row broke out, Lady Ashton's office produced an amended transcript of her speech, showing that she had also made a reference to Israeli victims of Palestinian rocket attacks from Gaza in the city of Sderot in southern Israel.
In the comments, Lady Ashton, the EU's "high representative" for foreign policy, appeared to be referring to deaths of 23 people, including children, last week following Israel Defence Force (IDF) operations in response to Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza.
In a major diplomatic row between the EU and Israel, Ehud Barak, Israel's defence minister, demanded that Lady Ashton withdraw the comments.
"The comparison made by Ashton between events in Gaza, Toulouse and Syria is outrageous and disconnected from reality," he said.
"The IDF is operating in Gaza with the utmost caution in order to prevent injury to innocent people. I hope the EU's foreign minister quickly understands her mistake and retracts her statements.
Lady Ashton has further fuelled the row by accusing press reporting of her speech as "grossly distorted".
"The high representative referred to tragedies taking the lives of children around the world and drew no parallel whatsoever between the circumstances of the Toulouse attack and the situation in Gaza," said her spokesman.
"Any suggestion that there is a parallel or comparison is incorrect."

Laurent Preece, Director of "StandWithUs" France, a pro-Israel campaigning group, said: "These comments are beyond the pale. She should apologise immediately or resign her position."

| She "was misunderstood" of course. Sadly, the killer appears to have been a Islamist terrorist who claims the deaths of Palestinian children as justification. Maybe he was listening to too many of Ashton's previous speeches. Yemach shemam.

No news there! we all know that she and her cohorts in the EU, as well as the UN are just a bunch of anti-semites.
