Ger put the peyos under the kappel. Belz would curl the peyos and put it behind the ear.
We're Belz, my son's peyos are chin length which dh CUTS if it grows longer than that.

Belz - payos should be at least so long that they reach in center under the chin. after that a lot burn them of.
My boys go gekraizelte payos ( nowadays most boys/ yugelait dont turn the payos around the ears but let it fall in a nice curl) with the help of gel if needed.
A lot of boys go for a perm if it doesn't curl.
When de boy get older they don't even let to cut/burn it of, my ds says it's assur! and my DH alo never cut of his payos and he has long ones, longer than his shoulders

| My husband doesn't cut his payos either, but he twists them up behind his ears. Where I live, only boys or men who are in kollel or klei kodesh go with their payos down. My dh works with non-religious or MO Jews and also sometimes with non-Jews and he figures he looks strange enough with his beard and chassidishe dress...

Of my two sons only one has peyos to his chin (looks shorter once curled). The other has stick straight hair - so I've trimmed it to 'lip length'. He has a habit of chewing on just about anything, and his peyos were fair game
As for the burning - my mom does that. With a T-pin heated over a flame, she then holds the hair away from the face, and just slides it through at the desired length. (At that point the flame's shut off, and the child is no where near an open flame).
My husband was horrified at the thought of 'fire' anywhere near his kids... (actually he's pretty much horrified at the thought of anything remotely hot within ten feet of his kids. Or himself ) so I don't 'burn off' my kids peyos, but rather trim it with a scissors.
[I should note that I'm Satmar, and the 'chin length' is in Satmar tradition to the best of my knowledge. The Rebbe wasn't a fan of wearing it longer.]

My son's payos are well past his shoulders, even curled, same for my husband's. _________________ Liba, mommy to Zlata Tova 5/6/98, Tziporah Faiga 1/12/01, Esther Rivka 7/13/04 and Avraham Chaim 7/2/2006

| I would fight about curling them. I love the curly peyos look. Stick straight, not so much. (I would imagine with modern curling irons, not a difficult job)

| I have two left hands, so it would be a huge job for me, therefore I am not going to fight for that. I can't even get my son with the curly hair's payos to look smooth and neat; they always look bushy and messy.

| SarahD the key to neat curly payos with naturally curly hair IME is lots of good conditioner. We use Pantene.

| We're belz and no one I know cuts or burns thier payos. When my boys were younger their payos were pretty messy since I was never able to get it right and I refused to use gel as was suggested to me, but we never cut them. As the boys got older they became experts at curling their own peyos (around their fingers and holding it in place - no gel, no pins). My husband also never cut his and wraps it around his ears.

I have some Pantene conditioner. Maybe my son will even let me put it in his hair. Thanks.

| Sarad, what ever happened? You can always come visit me. My 10-11 year old neighbor offered to curl ds's payos every morning, once we cut his hair!

I know I'm not chassidish in any form or way, but DS (5) has nice curly payos about mid-way between ear and chin. I don't know how long he's going to grow them later on in life, he only gets a little trim with every haircut. _________________ גשם, גשם בוא!

Past chin length, closer to shoulder, but we're not satmer or sanz or anything of teh sort, closer to breslov and ashlag which dont trim peyos.
My husbands peyos reach the middle of his chest, curled.
In our old seret vizhnitz shul, the guys had peyos that when curled, were between the bottom of the earlobe and the chin.

The appropriate term would be Klipas (literally peelings) means belonging to the Sitra Achra)
as all the extras of the body are considered Klipas, overgrown head hair, nails, and other bodily emissions

I Don't have kids yet but I can tell you how DH's peyos are and how our families do it...
DH - pulls peyos to meet at the bottom/front of his chin and cuts it... curled it reaches the cheekbone. that's how its done at my in-laws. In my family, we usually cut it so when it is curled it is lip length. my father can't stand long peyos.
for little boys, about up to 9, if they have straight hair (which most have) my sisters / brothers cut it lip length so it is not messy.
5 year old nephew gives BIL the silent treatment for 2 straight days .... (he claims he's the only one with baby peyos) he has thin flyaway hair and if its too much longer than his earlobes he looks WILD and MESSY...
bytheway, I'm satmar. _________________ I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing

Is there a specific reason he is against curling aids? Because the only way you'll be able to curl straight hair is either a perm (you can do it yourself) or a curling iron.
Real chassidishe peyos is rather defined as a wide shiur (which your boys have), not as length. Krazzling the peyos is the only way to tame the wide shiur.
